Medical science and technology innovation: Stick to the original intention to do it

In order to better protect people's health, medical science and technology innovation has continued to make efforts, which is the impression brought to people in the field of health in the past week. "China's Important Medical Achievements in the 21st Century" and "China's Important Medical Progress in 2023" were released at the 2024 China Medical Development Conference, and the project of "Safety and Effectiveness Evaluation of Clinical Application of Domestic Joint Surgery Robot" was launched, and the health center used a remote ward round trolley...... A number of new developments are encouraging.

On the one hand, many diseases are still incurable, and climate change and environmental pollution have brought new problems, and mankind needs to master more weapons to deal with health threats through medical science and technology innovation. With the deepening of the reform of the medical and health system, from improving the average life expectancy, solving incurable diseases to improving the people's experience of medical treatment, all aspects need to be empowered by science and technology. On the other hand, some countries are strengthening their right to speak in scientific and technological innovation, and are blocking other countries with different degrees of technology and resources, thus forming a "bottleneck" problem in the fields of drugs, medical devices, medical equipment, and vaccines. Therefore, only by accelerating the promotion of medical science and technology innovation can we be self-reliant and self-reliant.

Adhere to the world's frontier of science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, the major needs of the country, and the life and health of the people, and continue to march towards the breadth and depth of science and technology. Under the guidance of this flag, the country has launched a series of deployments. In September 2023, the Notice of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council on Adjusting the Establishment of the Responsibilities and Institutions of the National Health Commission clearly stated that the responsibility of the Ministry of Science and Technology for organizing and formulating plans and policies for the development of science and technology for health development will be transferred to the National Health Commission. This move will accelerate the construction of a scientific and technological innovation system that is in line with the characteristics of the health industry. Many provinces have followed up one after another, and continue to come up with specific plans and measures in terms of increasing investment in medical science and technology, establishing an organization and coordination mechanism for medical science and technology innovation, strengthening the construction of medical science and technology innovation teams, and improving incentive and guarantee policies for scientific and technological innovation. For example, recently, the Beijing Municipal Health Commission, the Municipal Medical Insurance Bureau, the Municipal Development and Reform Commission and other departments jointly introduced a number of measures to support the high-quality development of innovative pharmaceuticals to accelerate the innovation of the pharmaceutical and health industry and help develop new quality productivity.

It can be said that in the field of medical science and technology innovation, we have both determination and confidence, and confidence comes from existing achievements: the first based on a multi-target synergistic mechanism, China's original new drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease has been conditionally approved for marketing, filling the gap of no new drug in this field in the world for 17 years; the first recombinant cervical cancer vaccine in China has been launched, which has improved product accessibility and further met the needs of the public; new anti-cancer drugs and new antihypertensive drugs have been approved and marketed in the United States, achieving a breakthrough in China's innovative drugs going overseas; and a variety of biosimilars have been approved for marketing in China, breaking the monopoly of foreign patented drugs......

Behind the brilliant achievements is that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the country has continuously deepened the reform of the scientific and technological system, through the establishment of a national clinical medical research center, the organization and implementation of major national scientific and technological projects for the prevention and treatment of major infectious diseases, and the strengthening of the construction of the drug innovation system, to build a platform for high-level innovation work, and to guide health workers to explore the problems found in their work. At the same time, in order to adapt the incentive policies for medical science and technology innovation, the National Health Commission actively coordinates with relevant departments so that the medical institutions relying on the national scientific and technological innovation bases, such as the National Clinical Medical Research Center, can enjoy the same policies as universities and scientific research institutes; All aspects of work have greatly activated the innovative vitality of medical institutions and boosted the morale of health workers to carry out scientific research.

It can be seen that while artificial intelligence, mobile 5G technology, and bionic robots "click" on the future, medical science and technology innovation work will "grab" the place, and the innovative technologies from all walks of life will be brought together and applied to health. Artificial intelligence-assisted diagnostic tools, surgical robots, and portable health indicator monitoring devices have "flown into" medical institutions and homes from laboratories to better safeguard people's health with new quality productivity.

The prospects are wonderful, but the exploration ahead still touches on difficulties. Among them, the overall investment is insufficient, the clinical research foundation is weak, the integration of innovation resources is insufficient, and the support and guarantee system needs to be improved, all of which need to be paid attention to.

A member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) pointed out at the National People's Congress and the National People's Congress in 2021 that the proportion of the mainland's total investment in medicine and health sciences has a large room for improvement; only a few clinical research institutions can conduct international multi-center clinical research, which has become a weak link in the field of pharmaceutical innovation; although the mainland has abundant resources for medical research cases, the research resources lack overall planning and integration, and the huge resource advantage has not yet been transformed into the advantage of health security science and technology output.

At this year's National People's Congress and the National People's Political Consultative Conference, some members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) said frankly that medical personnel will encounter many problems in their work, but they often do not realize that these problems have potential room for innovation. The other side of the coin has to be seen, recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China notified the first batch of scientific research misconduct cases in 2024, which involved a number of medical schools.

Medical research is related to the quality of scientific research and the health and well-being of the people. Medical science and technology innovation has a long way to go, and only by sticking to the original intention of protecting people's health can we continue to do so.
