Under what circumstances can gas explode and catch fire?

Flowing gas or canned gas in pipelines is safe without strong damage, and generally speaking, gas explosions and fires require three elements at the same time.

1. Gas leakage

Gas leaks mainly occur in three parts: leaks at connections, leaks from gas hoses, and leaks from valves. Of course, improper use can also cause leakage, such as when the soup overflows to extinguish the flame of the gas stove, the gas may leak.

2. Reach explosive concentration

Methane is the main component of artificial gas and natural gas, and the concentration of methane in the air is too high or too low generally not to cause an explosion, but when it is in between, it may cause an explosion.

3. Encounter an ignition source

When in the range of explosion concentration, including but not limited to the following circumstances, explosion may occur.

How to tell if there is a gas leak

Smell with your nose

In general, the gas is odorized (ethyl mercaptan) for general civilian gas supply, so that the gas has an odor similar to rotten eggs, so it is easy to find the leak, so once a similar odor is detected in the home, it may be a gas leak.

Look at the gas meter

In the case of no gas at all, check whether the number in the red box at the end of the gas meter is moving, if it is moving, it can be judged that there is a leak behind the gas meter valve (such as the hose and interface between the stove and the water heater connected to the gas meter).

Apply soapy water

Mix soap or laundry detergent with water and apply it to gas pipes, gas meter hoses, switches and other places that are prone to air leakage.

In the event of a gas leak, the soap will be blown into a bubble. When you see foam forming and increasing, it indicates that there is an air leak in this section. For very small leaks, it may not be observed, and the test results of professional testing tools shall prevail.
