"Most people's understanding of nuclear carving skills begins with the Ming Dynasty writer Wei Xueyun's "The Story of the Nuclear Boat": on a fruit core only two centimeters high, carved with their own demeanor and vivid characters and scenes. A small nuclear carving not only shows the exquisite skill of miniature carving, but also presents thousands of years of cultural memory in front of our eyes. Weifang Shihu Garden Museum specially held the "Museum on the Fingertips 'Nuclear Carving Handmade Jewelry DIY' Activity" on Labor Day, let us walk into the microcosm of nuclear carving and understand this ingenious intangible cultural heritage skills.

Weifang nuclear carving Shihu Garden workshop
Zhang Yongbin has loved nuclear carving skills since he was a child, making tools by himself and exploring carving for many years because of his hobby, but he has no one to guide him. In 2003, he was fortunate to worship under Pei Rixin and became the sixth generation inheritor of Weifang nuclear carving. After the careful guidance of Mr. Pei, the nuclear carving skills have increased greatly, coupled with years of exploration, and gradually formed the artistic characteristics of the idea of tradition, simple and concise, elegant and smooth, and distinctive personality, and many of his nuclear carving works have been collected by relevant domestic collection institutions and individuals. His masterpieces "Nuclear Boat" and "Horse-drawn Car" have won many awards in national competitions, and his work "Fruitful" won the gold medal in the exhibition competition in Shandong Province. In 2016, Zhang Yongbin won the title of "Weifang City Arts and Crafts Celebrity", and in 2017, Zhang Yongbin won the title of "Weifang City Arts and Crafts Master" and "Arts and Crafts Artist".
Nuclear carved ornaments
Nuclear carving belongs to the category of miniature carving, the material of the work is mainly peach pit, olive pit, apricot core and other hard texture of the kernel, carved on the thumb-sized kernel carved out of different forms of patterns and ornaments, with its exquisite artistry and profound cultural connotation has become a precious historical and cultural heritage of the mainland. The skill of nuclear carving was recorded in the middle of the Song Dynasty, and by the Ming Dynasty, it had flourished. The people of the Ming Dynasty praised this skill as a ghost stunt, and the famous prose "Nuclear Boat Record" written by Wei Xuexun recorded in the "Yu Chu Xinzhi" is known to women and children, it vividly describes the scene of the artist Wang Shuyuan carving Su Dongpo and others on a peach pit at that time, and its vivid and detailed description not only makes the nuclear carving skill have a page of historical record, but also makes this craft well-known and loved.
Nuclear carving can be divided into north and south according to the region, the southern school mainly refers to the Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas dominated by Suzhou, mainly carved olive core; the northern school is the northern region centered on Weifang, Shandong, mainly carved peach pit, even carved apricot kernel, therefore, Weifang nuclear carving is also known as the northern school of nuclear carving, on June 7, 2008, Weifang nuclear carving was approved by the State Council to be included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
In 1915, Ding Huaizeng (Zi Nianting), who was a housekeeper in the home of Ding Si Zhai, a wealthy gentleman in Weixian County (now Shihu Garden), saw the news from the newspaper that the Panama-Pacific International Exposition would be held in San Francisco, USA, "because he was obsessed with peach pit carving since he was a child, and his nuclear carving skills were also extraordinary, so he signed up and invited Du Langui, a famous nuclear carver in Weixian County, to carve a "horse-drawn car" nuclear carving work to participate in the competition, and won the best medal of the Panama Games in one fell swoop, and became famous at home and abroad. This grand event was included in the art category of the thirty-second volume of the "Weixian Chronicles" of the Republic of China.
