College student volunteers are an active force in the development of volunteer service in China, and college student volunteer service has the dual functions of "helping others" and "educating people", that is, promoting college students to obtain their own personality growth and quality development while caring for and helping the social population. In the new stage of the development of Chinese-style modernization, the quality requirements for college student volunteers have new elements and new characteristics. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China put forward that "the essential requirements of Chinese-style modernization are: adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party of China, adhere to socialism with Chinese characteristics, achieve high-quality development, develop whole-process people's democracy, enrich the people's spiritual world, achieve common prosperity for all people, promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and create a new form of human civilization." "It contains a lot of content, and it also provides a broad space for college student volunteers and puts forward new requirements. To this end, we analyze the new connotation and new elements of college students' volunteer service from seven aspects.

Be a volunteer with ideals and beliefs
Talking about ideals and beliefs in China is not a new topic, but it must be raised and discussed again at every other stage. We have found that today's talk about being a volunteer with ideals and beliefs is based on two practical problems: First, with the market economy and secular trends, more and more young people "no longer believe" and "do not talk about ideals", but only talk about feelings and enjoyment, fun and excitement. Second, some volunteers, including college student volunteers, are reluctant to think too much, saying that they are just a little kind and do some good deeds. However, from the perspective of the participation and development of college student volunteers, and from the promotion and development of college students' volunteer services, if there is no better ideals, beliefs, and aspirations, we will lose motivation and be confused while doing things. This is because it is difficult to persevere when you have experienced the novelty and curiosity of the initial stage of volunteering and turn to the mundane and trivial things day after day, and it is difficult to persevere when you experience a relaxation and happiness that is different from what you imagined, and when you encounter difficult problems and need to pay hard. At this time, ideals and beliefs are precisely the key to supporting college student volunteers to persevere and do a good job, which can bring continuous motivation. Of course, when talking about the ideals and beliefs of volunteers, there are not only communist ideals and socialist beliefs from a political point of view, but also a life story about "seeing farther and thinking more" and pursuing a better future for society. In fact, I came from the 80s of the 20th century, when I was also a young man, and there was also the confusion of "three faith crises (faith crisis, trust crisis, and confidence crisis)" during that period, but after decades of reform and opening up, I have been engaged in volunteer service research and dissemination for decades, but I have gradually come out of the confusion and gained faith and firmness. To use a very simple analogy, it is "one must always see something higher than the tip of the nose." "Money and material things are very important, but it is to satisfy people to eat, drink, and have fun, so what else is there to have? It is to feel the warmth between people, the beauty in society, the hope in life, etc., these are the very simple ideals and beliefs of volunteers, and they are closely related to the pursuit of communism and socialism. Xu Benyu, an outstanding young volunteer, more than 20 years ago, because he saw a report published in the "China Youth Daily" that the school environment of children in remote rural areas in the mountainous areas of Guizhou was very poor and there was a lack of teachers, he went to teach in the summer on his own, and later went to teach for one or two years after graduation, thus "moving China" and driving many people to participate in the "Benyu Volunteer Service Team" to carry out volunteer teaching and other kinds of volunteer services. I met Xu Benyu several times, and when I communicated, he didn't make a big sense, saying, "I just hope that the children in the mountainous areas will be better and have a good future." This is a very simple ideal and belief, which is closely linked to the goal of striving for a better life for the people, and has become the driving force to motivate volunteers to love and dedicate. It can be seen that the ideals and beliefs of college student volunteers are, simply put, the hope to make society better and people's lives better through volunteer service, and more far-reaching is to promote the progress of social civilization and promote the happiness of human life. These understandings and understandings are gradually combined with communist ideals and socialist beliefs, and have become the fundamental driving force for the growth of college student volunteers.

Be a volunteer with a sense of family and country
Talking about the feelings of home and country of young volunteers and college student volunteers, it originated from the discussion and analysis of several experts and volunteer veterans when they communicated with each other after participating in the evaluation of the China Youth Volunteer Service Public Welfare Entrepreneurship Competition last year (2023). We believe that from the years of the revolutionary war to the era of the construction of New China, as well as the new era of reform and opening up, and the new era with Chinese characteristics, there are many young people who have fought bravely and forged ahead under the guidance of the feelings of the family and the country, which is worthy of in-depth exploration and research. For this reason, I also think that when college student volunteers participate in the service, they not only do some good deeds and help some people, but also an important way to cultivate the feelings of family and country and deepen the patriotic spirit in the process. This is because, when college student volunteers go deep into communities and rural areas, into plains and mountainous areas, and into coastal and border areas to carry out volunteer services, and get close to the people, they will increase their understanding and affection for our country and increase their deep affection and friendship for our people. Since 2010, I have been invited to the student volunteer service club of the "Three Rural Areas" of Minzu University of China several times for exchange and counseling, and I have been moved and infected by the feelings of these student volunteers. When many students enter universities and classrooms, they do not understand China's national conditions and communities and rural areas, and their understanding is very superficial, and they are also influenced by various trends of thought. At this time, through the recruitment activities of university student associations, sign up for the "Three Rural Areas, Rural Areas, and Rural Areas", listen to the speeches of experts and scholars who care about farmers to understand the situation of the countryside, understand the needs of farmers from the exchange and discussion of collecting rural conditions, and feel the real situation of the countryside and the real needs of farmers from the in-depth investigation and research of rural areas during the winter and summer vacations every year. In this way, college student volunteers combine professional learning with service to rural areas and dedication to farmers, and gradually clarify the goal of growing into talents. Some of the college students who participated in the volunteer service activities of the "Caring for Agriculture, Rural Areas and Rural Areas" later signed up for the volunteer service of the Western Plan, some signed up for the volunteer service of overseas Chinese language dissemination, and some signed up for the volunteer service of caring for people with special difficulties, and after graduating from university and taking up the job, they continued to organize and implement volunteer service activities to care for and help rural farmers. From this case, we can see that cultivating the feelings of family and country and cultivating the patriotic spirit is not only about reading books and listening to reports, but also about participating in volunteer services for communities and rural areas, so as to enhance feelings and raise awareness through service experience.
03Be a volunteer with a mass concept
At no time can Communist Party members be divorced from the masses, they must have a mass concept, and they must follow the mass line. In the same way, college student volunteers should also have the concept of the masses, keep close contact with the masses, truly serve the masses, and also gain inspiration and strength from the masses. Some people will say, "I was born into a family of workers or peasants, am I not a mass, why should I cultivate the concept of the masses?" In fact, college student volunteers come from various types of mass families, but on the one hand, they are far from the lives of the general public from the campus life of primary schools, middle schools, and universities; on the other hand, the living conditions of each family are different, and they are familiar with the situation of themselves or their relatives and friends, but they do not necessarily understand the living conditions of the public. In particular, urban students do not understand the life of the rural people in the mountainous areas, and rural students do not understand the life of the people in the old communities. To this end, college student volunteers should learn to understand the needs of the masses, proceed from the wishes of the masses, and consider the interests of the masses when they go deep into the communities and rural areas to carry out services. We have come into contact with many volunteers of the Western China Program and the Graduate Student Support Group, and they have been greatly shaken and have a lot of thoughts and feelings after they go to the mountainous villages, especially after participating in the service in the border areas. Whether it is the situation of children in mountainous areas and border areas, as well as their various wishes and needs, or the living conditions and development needs of the people in mountainous areas and rural areas, they are all different from what college students imagined in advance, and there are many complex and diverse twists and turns. To this end, college student volunteers not only prepare and teach classes well, and strive to guide the growth of children in mountainous areas with sincerity and fresh knowledge, but also take the initiative to contact caring enterprises, love funds, social enthusiasts and other resources to help the growth of children in mountainous areas and improve the lives of rural people. Now it will be further developed to provide assistance for rural revitalization and help for beautiful villages. We found that college student volunteers used to just think about giving full play to their enthusiasm and strengths, and doing some volunteer services, but now they have learned to plan and implement a variety of effective volunteer service projects based on the aspirations of the people in the mountainous areas and the needs of rural children. Therefore, college students establishing the concept of the masses in volunteer service is a kind of quality improvement and ideological sublimation.
04Be a professional volunteer
In the early days of the development of volunteer service, some generalized and formalized activities caused controversy among the masses, saying that some college student volunteers only "looked at the elderly and put on a show", and lacked targeted and professional services. With the development and change of the times and the needs of the people, college student volunteers are required to give full play to their interests and specialties and provide professional services. Recently, a "Volunteer Observation" article published on the WeChat public account of "China Youth Volunteers" entitled "College Volunteer Service Should Have More "Professional Work"" has attracted widespread attention, which proposes that college student volunteers should not only use their majors to serve the community and rural areas, but also do a good job of professional technical skills according to the needs of the masses. When we participated in the review of the 6th China Youth Volunteer Service Public Welfare Entrepreneurship Competition, there was a project that attracted wide attention and attention from the judges. That is, the project of "Qiancheng Worry-free - Vocational Education Helps the Development of Rural Tourism" carried out by volunteers of Tianjin University. When college students volunteer to teach in the mountainous towns and villages of Guizhou, they find that "rural tourism" is in full swing in various regions, but there are still many surrounding people who are not good at taking advantage of opportunities such as tourism product sales and tourism food consumption, and are still in a situation of low income and economic difficulties. After investigation, it was found that the main reason is that local farmers lack tourism concepts, knowledge and skills, stay in the habits of traditional agricultural production, and cannot benefit from the development of rural tourism. To this end, they carried out the volunteer service of "night school + tourism", and opened 24 courses in four categories for the villagers, including basic culture courses, tourism service courses, skill improvement courses, and folk culture courses, gradually revitalizing the rural consumer market, promoting the reemployment of rural idle labor, and driving villagers to increase their economic income and improve their lives. Nowadays, through the establishment of an information platform, the way of online and offline "night school" teaching has been adopted and promoted in more than 40 places in 7 provinces across the country, out of Guizhou and to the whole country, and has been promoted and expanded in Gansu, Fujian, Tianjin and other places, helping many regions to realize the successful transformation of tourism resources into tourism assets. It can be seen that college student volunteers have the advantages of "teachers + students" and "knowledge + creativity" when they are facing the social population and going deep into the community and rural areas to carry out services, and provide support and help for the masses through professional communication and promotion.
05Be a smart and innovative volunteer
In order for college students to be vigorous and energetic, it is necessary to give full play to the wisdom and creative advantages of young people, and to let young people get innovative opportunities in volunteer service. The development of Chinese-style modernization requires the innovation and creativity of a new generation of college students, and it is also a good opportunity to experience and exercise in volunteer service. On the one hand, college students dare to think and explore, and are good at finding new ways and new ways to help and solve problems in the face of the situation of rural communities and the needs of urban and rural people. On the other hand, college students have mastered new methods and ways of learning in the information age, and are able to combine their own thinking with a wide range of information to open up new paths and new horizons for volunteer service in rural communities. Zhang Jiaxin, an outstanding young volunteer in Beijing, took the initiative to sign up for the Sunshine Volunteer Association after being admitted to Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications from other places, and carried out services such as caring for and helping migrant children and caring for the elderly in the community. Especially in the elderly care service, they found that the biggest difficulty of the "silver-haired people" is that they are disconnected from the information age and are blocked from the online world. To this end, Zhang Jiaxin and his friends launched the "Sunset and Morning" volunteer service, from teaching the elderly "mobile phones, Internet access, games" and other technologies, to developing simple tutorials for the elderly to use the Internet to start a smart life, and then to guide the elderly to use intelligent technology to participate in community governance. Zhang Jiaxin, He Shaosen, Luo Xu and other college and graduate student volunteers use their wisdom and wisdom to bring hope and happiness to the elderly and bring vitality and vitality to the society. Nowadays, the "Sunset and Morning" volunteer service project involves more and more fields, covering urban communities across the country, and has become a volunteer activity that plays a positive role in the construction of "Smart China". I have known Zhang Jiaxin for more than 10 years, and I often communicate with the college student volunteers who graduated from university, master's and doctoral degrees, whether they become university teachers or scientific researchers, etc., they have been volunteering with wisdom to create a better life for the people and make excellent contributions. I believe that in the process of Chinese-style modernization, more intelligent college student volunteers are needed to make contributions and achievements in various fields.
06Be a volunteer with governance skills
Volunteer service should help grassroots governance, and college student volunteers should also actively participate in the governance innovation of rural communities, give full play to their love and enthusiasm, give full play to their wisdom and talents, and give full play to their professional expertise, etc., to help solve problems and promote improvement bit by bit. On the one hand, college student volunteers should consult and learn from residents and villagers to understand the local living conditions, folk characteristics, the causes of governance problems, and the paths and opportunities to solve them. When I participated in the project of youth volunteers in Hubei Province to serve in the community, I found a very enlightening case. Hongmiao Community in Enshi City has always faced problems such as high regional population density, backward infrastructure, and low degree of refinement of community services. This time, college student volunteers entered the community and jointly implemented the "community plan" with elderly volunteers and women volunteers in the community, which is to explore the fine governance mechanism of "meticulous treatment" with "embroidery kung fu" in response to problems. Concrete implementation of the "six micro fine treatment" plan. That is, to pay attention to the "micro-demands" of residents, help the community "micro-welfare", flexibly use "micro-methods", build "micro-positions" of activities, meet the "micro-wishes" of the masses, and realize the "micro-happiness" of the community. In this way, the "community plan" of youth volunteer service aims at the existing problems and the needs for improvement, making breakthroughs bit by bit and making results bit by bit, so that the masses can see the tenacious power of volunteer service and feel the value of volunteer service. In this way, starting from the subtlety and being good at detail, college student volunteers and community volunteers have solved governance problems one by one, creating a harmonious atmosphere and a beautiful environment for the masses to live. In addition, Boluo County, Guangdong Province, carried out the "Volunteer Service Program for College Students Returning to Their Hometowns" to guide college student volunteers to participate in the survey of 100 villages, find out the problems and cruxes faced by rural governance, and also collect the experience of rural governance and creating harmony across the country, and put forward effective suggestions to solve problems and promote changes, which were adopted by towns and villages and produced good results. It can be seen that in the process of participating in rural community governance services, college student volunteers not only learn practical experience from the grassroots people, but also play an intellectual support role in the grassroots society, play an innovative and promoting role, and show positive results.
07Be a volunteer with an international perspective
Contemporary college student volunteers, in the two "great changes in a century" era, should not only have the awareness of domestic service and contribution, but also the awareness of international service and contribution, and actively contribute to the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the international vision of college student volunteers has been continuously expanded and enriched. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, and the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade are opportunities for college students to participate in international competitions and international exhibitions, and to show the demeanor of Chinese youth to the world, which has attracted global attention and praise. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, and the 2023 Chengdu Universiade further demonstrated the love, enthusiasm, and professionalism of Chinese college student volunteers, providing high-quality and creative services, and winning global respect and admiration. At the same time, college student volunteers go abroad to participate in projects such as the Chinese Youth Volunteer Overseas Service Program, which serves United Nations agencies, to provide caring help and sincere services to the people in their countries and regions, and at the same time to understand and learn from the experience of other countries and enrich their own quality and ability. Adhering to the creative principle of "based on the Bay Area, spreading the sound to the world", it has cooperated with more than 30 units such as the State Administration of Radio and Television and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, organized tens of thousands of young people from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese to conduct in-depth visits and research, and built channels on more than 40 platforms such as China Central Radio and Television, Learning Power, Cloud Listening, Cantonese Listening, Huacheng FM, Chinese Headlines (Overseas), Zhishu (Hong Kong, China), and Bus Newspaper (Hong Kong, China). The volunteer service of these college students in the new era has promoted international and domestic exchanges and integration, promoted communication and cooperation at home and abroad, and made outstanding contributions to the realization of the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the friendly image of China's international cooperation and development, and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
The construction and development of Chinese-style modernization provides new opportunities for college students to study, grow, and develop into talents, and also promotes the volunteer spirit of dedication, fraternity, mutual assistance, and progress for college students, carries out volunteer services for communities and rural areas, provides care and assistance to the people, improves their ideological and moral level through time and experience, improves their own quality and ability, and becomes qualified talents for modernization.
