Wedge-tung

Recently, Liangzi has received requests for "house type optimization" from many customers across the country. In the process of optimization, I found that the demand for "two-room to three-room" was the strongest.

There are two main reasons for this.

First, the area of the school district is generally not large, and it turns out that two rooms are enough for one child. Now after the second child, you have to squeeze out a bedroom.

Second, because of economic reasons, it is really impossible to afford to change to a larger house, so it is necessary to optimize for an extra bedroom.

After a period of practice and discussion in the "Good Friends" group, Liangzi summed up some practices. Rather than having fun alone, it is better to have fun together, so today's article is a presentation of research results.

If we are fortunate enough to help you solve the "confusion", we are very happy, and if you have a better solution, we are welcome to talk together. (A group of friends is welcome to join and discuss together)

Design principles

Every two-child family has their own needs:

Some families have a difference between a man and a woman, and some families have an age difference between one big and one small;

Some parents want their two children to have their own rooms, while others can accept two children sharing a room.

Some families do not accept high and low beds for safety, while others prefer to choose high and low beds for the sake of efficient use of space.

So every two-child family is different, so how do we deal with these different needs?

Because of the different needs, we developed some principles before we started researching.

First, the principle of functionality

We want each child's room to have a minimum configuration: a single bed with a width of 1 meter, a desk about 1 meter long, and a wardrobe of about 1.5 meters to meet the basic functional requirements of a children's bedroom.

On top of that, if there is an expansion of the functionality, it is the icing on the cake.

Second, the principle of comfort

In the process of preliminary design, we came up with a lot of plans. Some were complained about being like a prison cell, small and unlit, and some were complained about being like a rented apartment, which was not humane at all.

Therefore, comfort is a very important assessment criterion for us, the room area should not be less than 5 square meters, and there must be direct or indirect lighting.

Third, the principle of fairness

There is a principle of "uniformity" in residential design. And when allocating rooms to two children, there is actually a problem of "fairness".

This is a very important principle for two-child families, because the children are still young, we can teach them to "let the pears be made", but when distributing, we can't always ask for "let the pears", the children will also have "ideas".

Preconditions

Although this is a virtual study, we use real cases. This is a customer from Shijiazhuang, his house was originally an intermediate set of two ladders and three households, and he hoped to change it into a three-bedroom to meet the needs of two children about 10 years old.

So this study is for the situation that the age difference between the two children is not too big, and at the same time the age is not too big. (The plan is shown below)

If one child is still an infant and the other is in school, this does not apply.

The same does not apply if one child is already living in school and the other is still homeschooling.

Because we have already optimized the other spaces in the early stage, the final focus is on how to digest the two-child room within the red box. (pictured above)

The six solutions we show below take different approaches. Solutions range from flat to three-dimensional, from fixed to flexible, from basic needs to functional expansion.

Simulation scenarios

In order to make it easier for readers to understand, we will show the floor plan with some effect diagrams and spatial analysis diagrams (the spatial model is provided by Wang Gong). Please note that the results may differ from the drawings.

Option 1

Sun Gong, an architect from Shanghai (pictured below)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

1. Remove the wardrobe from the children's room and arrange it centrally. The advantage is that the space is used more efficiently, but the privacy is slightly less.

2. Both children's rooms have a combination of "bed + desk", and the folding door can ensure that it can be opened and closed.

3. The children's room and the living room form a "migratory line", which is to consider the interest and children's psychology.

The idea of this solution is very good, and the functionality and comfort are satisfied. However, because children's room 1 has direct lighting, while children's room 2 does not, it is slightly lacking in fairness. (pictured above)

Option II

From Ryoko (pictured below)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

1. By separating the windows vertically, we hope to achieve the fairness of daylighting. Because windows are the greatest resource in the bedroom.

2. Entering from the unified entrance on the north side, both rooms are separate spaces with a shared toy cabinet at the door.

This scheme is relatively traditional, handles privacy well, and also considers the fairness of daylighting. However, because there is a difference in the size of the room between Child 1 and Child 2, the fairness is not well taken care of. The total area of each room is not large, so the comfort is also average. (pictured above)

Option III

From Ryoko (pictured below)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

1. The introduction of S-shaped beds can improve the efficiency of space use. But there is also the issue of fairness with bunk beds.

2. By dividing the windows vertically, the two rooms are basically close in size and lighting. Also consider the need to store clothes and toys at the entrance point.

This solution has further improved the efficiency of space utilization, in addition to the high and low beds, the comfort is also better. But the fly in the ointment is fairness, and there are always people who have to sleep on the top bunk. (pictured above)

Option IV

Mr. Ying from Beijing (as shown below)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

1. Through the introduction of three-dimensional furniture, the space is further used efficiently. Arrange your child's sleeping space on the top bunk, which can be a sofa or storage.

2. After the wardrobe and desk are laid out on the side, there is a large area for children's activities. In normal times, the sliding door is hidden in the dividing wall of the two beds, and at night, the sliding door is pulled out to form two independent spaces, so that the space can be divided and combined.

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

This solution really maximizes comfort with three-dimensional furniture and movable partitions. It is also well taken care of in fairness, because during the day, both children are active in the middle, so the lighting is shared. It was only when the sliding door was closed that there was a slight unfairness. (pictured above)

Option V

Mr. Ying from Beijing (as shown below)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

1. Separate the study room and form a migration with the living room, which will make the common area of the whole house larger.

2. After stripping off the study function, the children's room is mainly for sleeping and storage. Three-dimensional furniture can be used to realize the composite use of space. (pictured above)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

This scheme reorganizes the function of the children's room and thus reshapes the architectural space. In addition to making the common areas larger, the children's sleeping areas are more private and comfortable. But because there is only one window, even with a soft partition, the two rooms cannot be completely fair, which is a pity. (pictured above)

Option VI

Senior Brother Xue from Hangzhou (as shown below)

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

1. This scheme takes into account the introduction of modular furniture and is completely customized. Consider setting up the sleeping area in the upper part and the lower part for storage and writing.

How to optimize the design of the children's room for two-child families?

2. The biggest benefit of modular furniture is that it saves space and can leave a space for children to move by the window.

This plan is relatively niche, and families who like it may get a treasure, and those who don't like it will scoff at it. I think this option is the highest in terms of fairness. While functionality and comfort are acceptable, the biggest innovation is the introduction of modular furniture, which leaves room for movement. (pictured above)

Conclusion

Although Liangzi and Liangyoufang's friends have come up with 6 plans for the "optimization of children's rooms for two-child families", this is not exhaustive. For different customer needs, the answer is still unique.

For example, some customers can't accept a high bed for safety reasons, so we won't provide him with a three-dimensional bed solution.

Or, for example, if some families have lower equity requirements, we may think more about the efficient use of space.

For example, some families have strict budget requirements, so we don't recommend the modular furniture plan.

Therefore, we only provide our customers with the best solution. And when the customer needs are clear, the solution is the only one.

And when the client's needs are constantly wavering, no matter how experienced an architect is, there is nothing he can do. Not to mention that you only paid for a consultation once, but you want a "monthly" service.
