author:Xinjiang Li Sichen studied abroad

Just yesterday, QS released the latest "subject rankings" -

Compared with the comprehensive ranking, the subject ranking can better let us see which field each school is better at, and give more reference to students who "give priority to majors" when choosing a school.

The rankings rank 5 themes and 55 subjects. Notably, music has been added this year, and the rankings for data science and artificial intelligence have also expanded. In the end, a total of 1,559 universities were on the list, and 64 schools, including the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, made the list for the first time.

2024QS World University Rankings by Subject Released!

  QS Subject Ranking Indicators

  Academic reputation

  Employer reputation

  Research citations for each paper

H-index (a measure of the productivity and impact of a paper)

  International Research Network

  QS subject ranking weighting

Taking into account the differences in disciplines, QS uses different weights for the above indicators for each discipline.

For example, in the publication-intensive medical field, research citations and H-indices account for 25% of each university's total score.

In areas with low publication rates, such as history, research-related indicators account for only 15% of the total ranking score.

In the field of art and design, rankings are based solely on employer and academic surveys.

Let's take a look at the specific performance of each school.

  Global Ranking Highlights

The top universities in the United Kingdom and the United States competed, and who won in the end

Looking at the subject rankings, US institutions occupy the absolute lead with 32 out of 55 subject rankings.

Harvard's strength should not be underestimated, and it is a very good performer on the list, ranking first out of 19 subjects (14 last year). MIT ranked first out of 11 rankings, in line with last year's 11.

Let's take a look at the British universities, which compete every year but do not beat the American universities every year.

With 16 of the 55 subjects taking the first place, the University of Oxford topped the list in 4 subjects, followed by the University of Cambridge, University College London (UCL), the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy of Music with 2 disciplines each.

However, judging from the rankings of different disciplines, it is true that the disparity in strength is a bit large, but in fact, British and American universities have their own advantages.

Chinese institutions are making steady progress, second only to the United Kingdom and the United States

According to this subject ranking, Chinese mainland institutions have reached a new high of 882 (851 last year).

China (Mainland) is the third best performer in the world, and its universities are ranked in the top 10 out of eight disciplines. Tsinghua University has achieved three of the highest rankings in China, including an excellent performance in Art History (5th in the world).

In other areas, a hundred flowers are blooming

Australia's University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney have the most top-100 subjects in the world, with 53 and 52 subjects in the top 100 respectively.

Switzerland has the highest concentration of top-ranked subjects (4) in proportion to the number of universities ranked. ETH Zurich tops three of these programmes, making it the strongest performer on the continent.

In 2024, a total of 45 German universities will be included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, two fewer than last year.
