GM's autonomous vehicle division will resume operations
GM's self-driving car division, Cruise, will resume operations in the U.S., starting with a small fleet of human-driven vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona. The move comes after the company suspended operations for six months after an accident in San Francisco.
The company plans to use these human-driven vehicles to create maps and collect road information in selected cities, emphasizing the need to validate its autonomous driving system before fully resuming autonomous driving operations. Cruise plans to expand this effort to other cities. Meanwhile, its rival Waymo, which is owned by Alphabet, has been providing service in Phoenix for years and recently began offering driverless rides on the region's highways.
Microsoft will invest $2.9 billion to expand AI infrastructure
Microsoft Corp. said it would invest $2.9 billion over the next two years to expand its cloud computing and AI infrastructure in Japan, part of a series of big tech companies' overseas expansion efforts to support AI development. The investment, which is the largest in Microsoft's 46-year history of business operations in Japan, will also be used to train 3 million people in AI and set up a Microsoft Research Asia lab in Tokyo.
Server operators are expanding their data centers and cloud computing assets globally to support the surge in AI applications and workloads, a trend that follows the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Amazon's cloud computing arm is investing $10 billion in Mississippi and $5.3 billion in Saudi Arabia to build data centers in those regions. Google is building a $1 billion data center outside London.
Intel unveils a new generation of artificial intelligence chips
Intel unveiled a new generation of AI chips, called Gaudi 3, at Tuesday's Vision event, which aims to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the field of AI chips. The chip uses TSMC's 5nm process for faster training and higher computing power
Compared to NVIDIA's H100 processor, Gaudi 3 is able to train large language models in a more efficient way and achieve faster inference calculations on some models. With this move, Intel hopes to provide server manufacturers with more powerful AI solutions. This shows that the tech industry is struggling to find alternative sources of scarce AI chips and is increasingly competitive in the AI space.
