In the fifteenth year of Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty, that is, in October 1642, Abatai, the seventh son of the Qing Taizu Nurhachi, led a Qing army of 70,000 people and attacked the Ming Dynasty in the south. The Qing army went out of Wuling Mountain, the main peak of Yanshan, crossed between the Xinglong mountains, broke through the Huangyakou (now Huangyaguan) in one fell swoop, and defeated the Ming general Bai Tengjiao equal to Jizhou. The Qing army marched south from the Huangyakou of the Great Wall, and ran through Hebei and Shandong in 60 days, with 96 cities along the way. After the Qing army led by Abatai entrenched in Shandong for half a year, he led the army to return north with more than 12,000 taels of gold and more than 220,000 taels of silver plundered in the spring and summer of the sixteenth year of Chongzhen (1643). The Ming army fled in Shandong and Hebei provinces, and the Qing army went all the way north, and soon came in the direction of Yangliuqing and Tianjin.

The war was just around the corner, and Feng Yuanyang, then governor of Tianjin, discussed the strategy of resisting the enemy with the general Zhou Yuji, who was a famous general of the Ming Dynasty against the Qing Dynasty and served as the chief soldier of Tianjin. After Zhou Yuji came to Yang Liuqing with 500 cavalry, he went deep into the bank of the canal to investigate the geographical location, and found a Taoist temple here, called the Jade Emperor Temple, and visited Yang Liuqing's monk Tianquan here. Master Tianquan took General Zhou to walk on both sides of the Yangliuqing Canal, and gave suggestions that the Jade Emperor Temple was surrounded by many reeds and was suitable for ambush. So Zhou Yuji planted flags all over the place where the reeds and weeds were overgrown, and set up a straw man with armor and a sword, forming a suspicious array, and Master Tianquan opened the idol mechanism in the Taoist temple, and all the gods were under the control of the agency's message, and they could move and make some sounds, which made the uninformed people frightened. After all the arrangements are completed, wait for the Qing army to appear. As a result, Abatai's army was "hit" and was defeated by General Zhou Yuji and Master Tianquan.
