SAIC: Semi-solid-state batteries are on the car! GAC Haobo: All-solid-state batteries are about to be mass-produced

Originally, I thought that the mass production of solid-state batteries would be at least after 2028, and I advised consumers to wait until the mass production of solid-state batteries before considering buying electric vehicles at a high price. But I didn't expect solid-state batteries to come so quickly!

In 2023, car companies are still rolling up intelligent driving, 800V architecture, but they didn't expect to suddenly roll up solid-state batteries in 2024.

On April 8, SAIC's super smart sedan Zhiji L6 was officially unveiled, and the car company announced that it was equipped with the industry's first mass-produced "ultra-fast charging solid-state battery 1.0". According to the official information released by Zhiji, the battery is fully charged to more than 130kWh, the single energy density is 368Wh, and the CLTC comprehensive cruising range has exceeded 1000 km, which can achieve 10 minutes of charging to supplement the energy supplement efficiency of 400km range.

However, this battery is still a semi-solid-state battery in the strict sense, rather than a solid-state battery in the strict sense, because according to the description of Li Zheng, general manager of Qingtao Energy, the supplier of this battery, the "solid-state battery" still needs liquid components to wet the electrode piece to facilitate the movement of electrons between the pole pieces, but the mass of the "wetting agent" accounts for about 10% of the battery as a whole, while the data in ordinary lithium-ion batteries is about 15%. The reduction of electrolyte content by 5% is a welcome progress, but according to industry rules, it is generally divided according to the proportion of liquid electrolyte in the cell: liquid (25wt%), semi-solid (5-10wt%), quasi-solid (0-5wt%) and all-solid (0wt%). The electrolyte content of 10% has just reached the passing line for semi-solid-state batteries.

On April 9, GAC Haobo officially announced that it would unveil an all-solid-state battery on the 12th of this month, claiming to use 100% solid-state electrolyte, that is, a solid-state battery in the strict sense.

GAC claims that this battery has ultra-high energy density, super intrinsic safety, and ultra-wide temperature range, and has moved from the laboratory to mass production applications.

In fact, GAC announced in November last year that it will achieve mass production of all-solid-state batteries in 2026, and now it is held 2 years in advance of the press conference.

According to the data released by GAC Aion, the energy density of the battery has exceeded 350Wh/kg, and the battery capacity can be maintained at more than 90% after 150 cycles. It is unclear whether the data released on April 12 will exceed this level.

However, judging from GAC's statement, this release is not a semi-solid-state battery that plays with words, but an all-solid-state battery in the real sense, which will be a revolutionary progress in the history of new energy vehicle development.

Solid-state batteries are believed to end the competition between electric vehicles and fuel vehicles, with a significant increase in energy density, a range of more than 1,000 kilometers, no risk of thermal runaway, longer service life, and less affected by low temperatures.

GAC Group, although it does not look obvious, but it is indeed in the research and development of power batteries, ahead of domestic car companies, in their launch of the A480 super charging pile, the use of high-voltage DC fast charging technology, the maximum output power of up to 480KW, as early as three years ago, GAC Aion LX Plus Gong is equipped with the exclusive self-developed sponge silicon anode battery technology, and the CLTC comprehensive range reaches an astonishing 1008km, that is to say, the 1,000km range of the Zhiji L6 was achieved by GAC three years ago.

Although GAC's release may not be a real mass production, and mass production will take 2 years, GAC must have made an important technological breakthrough this time before it dares to publicly call SAIC like this, and it seems that all-solid-state batteries are really coming.
