1. Overview of the school

SIGMA Clermont is a public institution under the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and a member of the Gay-Lussac consortium. The school was formed on January 1, 2016 by the merger of the École Supérieure Mechanics de France (IFMA) and the École Nationale Supérieure de Chem Clermont-Ferrand (ENSCCF). It is a humane engineering school with strong links to industry, with a global and international outlook, closely linked to high-end research and entrepreneurship.

It has extensive contacts with large corporations and small businesses through the foundation. SIGMA has close relationships with big companies like Michelin and Limagran, so it has a lot of money to fund all of its educational programs. SIGMA students also develop their professional skills through a number of internships. About a quarter of the university's faculty members are engaged in humanities, social and international affairs to create better conditions for future engineers studying at SIGMA.

Comprehensive Foundation Year (CPI)

2 years at CPI in one of the 5 centers (Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Pau, Rennes, Strasbourg) and then 3 years at one of the 20 institutions of the Gay-Lussac consortium, without taking a competitive entrance exam at the time of admission, with only a continuous assessment to obtain a 5-year engineer degree.

Course Schedule

  • The CPI biennial course runs from September to June. The class schedule is about 30 hours per week and is divided into 2/3 science classes and 1/3 non-science classes.
  • Solid scientific training: chemistry-physics (theoretical and experimental methods) and mathematics-computer (mastery of basic tools).
  • Diversified international and humanities training: two compulsory modern languages (English and German or Italian or Spanish), an introductory course in economics and society, and an introductory course in communication skills.
