Toshiba Releases Arm for Motor Control? Cortex?-M4 microcontroller

- New additions to the TXZ+™ series of advanced M4K groups increase code flash memory to 512KB/1MB -

KAWASAKI, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has added eight new products with 512KB/1MB of flash memory and four package types to the M4K group of advanced 32-bit microcontrollers in the TXZ+ ™ family. These microcontrollers are equipped with a Cortex-M4® core with a floating point unit (FPU).

Advancements in IoT-enabled motor applications are driving the need for high-volume programs and firmware wireless download support.

The new product expands the code flash memory capacity from the maximum 256KB of Toshiba's existing products to 512KB[1]/1MB[2] (depending on the product), and the RAM capacity from 24KB to 64KB. Other features such as an Arm® Cortex-M4® core running at up to 160MHz, integrated code flash memory, and 32KB data flash memory with 100K program/erase cycle endurance are retained.

These microcontrollers also offer a variety of interfaces and motor control options, such as Advanced Programmable Motor Driver (A-PMD), 32-bit Advanced Encoder (A-ENC32), Advanced Vector Engine plus (A-VE+), and a three-unit high-speed, high-resolution 12-bit analog/digital converter. As a result, the products of the M4K group contribute to the wide application of the Internet of Things and bring advanced features to AC motors, brushless DC motors, and inverter control.

The new product implements 1MB code flash memory in two separate 512KB areas. This enables firmware replacement through the memory swap method [3], which allows instructions to be read from one region while the updated code is programmed to another region in parallel.

The devices in the M4K group integrate UART, TSPI, and I2C as common communication interfaces. These devices have built-in self-diagnostics for flash, RAM, ADC, and clock to help customers achieve IEC 60730 Class B functional safety certification.

Documentation, sample software and examples of its real-world use, as well as driver software to control each peripheral interface are available. Evaluation boards and development environments are provided in collaboration with Arm's® global ecosystem partners.

Toshiba is planning to increase flash memory capacity for the M4M group with a CAN interface as well.
