In the autumn of 1944, Dennis was appointed commander of the fortress of Montavellir by Hitler. He launched a counterattack against the Allies, being wounded by an explosion that left him unconscious for a while. Waking up the counterattack had been defeated by the Allies, with many soldiers dead. There were only more than 10,000 soldiers left and two deserters who were about to be executed.
Frey, who was in charge of monitoring him, brought him the "Knight of the Iron Cross" medal and a letter from his wife, as well as a personal order from the command to Frey, ordering the general to commit suicide and Frey as commander to lead the rest of the soldiers to fight back against the Allied forces. Dennis lay down and read the letter from his wife, who said that she had cancer, saved the sleeping pills prescribed by the doctor, and said goodbye to her life after submitting the letter. The general knew that his wife had died, and was no longer under the control of the Gestapo and persecution by the Hostage Law. A bold idea hardened that he wanted to rescue the rest of the soldiers, and that he could not let Frey take them to their deaths.
Frey thought the general had lost the battle and was waiting for him to hear his own finished gunfire from his bed. Suddenly, the general rushed out and pointed his pistol at Frey and the other man: "Don't move, I'll kill you, Booth, you call the Allies!" Frey said, "You want to surrender! "When he was pulling out his pistol, he was shot dead by the quick-eyed general.
More than 10,000 of Dennis's soldiers passed under the noses of the Grim Reaper, and they lined up to make their way to the Allied camp. His good wife, who was not suffering from cancer, happily threw herself into the general's arms.
