The story takes place in the slums of the West Side of Manhattan, New York, USA, where people of different races from all over the world gather, and these people of different races often clash with each other, and the racial contradictions are extremely serious. In the course of the constant struggle, two evenly matched gangs were formed, the "Rocket Gang", composed of local whites, with the leader called River, and the "Shark Gang", composed mainly of Puerto Ricans, with the boss called Bernardo. The two gangs often clashed over turf, resulting in bloodshed, and the conflict between the two sides was barely eased after the local police officer Clarky intervened several times.
One evening, there was a big dance party in the West End. At the ball, Bernardo's girlfriend Anita warns his sister Maria not to approach the "Rockets", but Maria doesn't care. River's good friend Tony also attends the ball, and he and Maria fall in love at first sight, and the two forget everything and dance with all their hearts. Bernardo saw all this, and he asked his brothers to forcibly take Maria.
