On September 29, Balboa sailed to the port of San Miguel, which he named. By the time the tide came, Barboa had already entered the water, raised the Castilian flag aloft and solemnly read out the testimony drafted by the notary:

“...... I have taken these seas, lands, coasts, harbors and islands of the south for the king of Castile, and I have taken possession of everything here...... If some king or leader, some Christian or Saracen, claims sovereignty over these lands and seas, then I will fight and fight with them by force in the name of the kings of Castile, now and past.

"The King of Castile had sovereignty and dominion over these parts of India. From the North Pole to the South Pole, the islands, the southern continents, the northern continents, and their oceans, as well as the sides of the equator, both in the constellation Lak and the Inner and Outer Regions of the constellation Mamochael...... Sovereignty now and forever until the world exists, until the Last Judgment. ”
