Eat more α-linolenic acid, which can protect the cardiovascular system! BMJ magazine analyzed 1.2 million people

author:Chinese Journal of Circulation

A study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that consuming more α-linolenic acid reduced the risk of death, particularly cardiovascular death.

α-linolenic acid is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid found in plants such as soybeans, nuts, rapeseed oil, and flaxseed.

The team analyzed 41 prospective cohort studies published between 1991 and 2021 in which nearly 1.2 million people studied the relationship between α-linolenic acid and the risk of death from various causes and cardiovascular disease.

The researchers found that high intakes of α-linolenic acid reduced all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and coronary heart disease mortality by 10 percent, 8 percent, and 11 percent, respectively.

This equates to a decrease of 113 deaths per 10,000 people per year for various causes, a decrease of 33 deaths from cardiovascular disease and a decrease of 23 deaths from coronary heart disease.

Moreover, it has been found that dietary α-linolenic acid intake has a dose-responsive effect with cardiovascular disease mortality, and increasing the intake of α-linolenic acid per day (equivalent to one tablespoon of rapeseed oil or 0.5 ounces of walnut oil) per day can reduce the risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular death by 5%.

In addition, according to dose-response analysis, the higher the blood α-linolenic acid level, the lower the mortality rate from coronary heart disease.

The researchers note that the findings are reliable given the use of rigorous criteria for inclusion in the study and the rigorous and systematic assessment of the quality of the study. The study further confirms the potential health benefits of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
