Guest businessman Wu Ting: 911 in the history of science and technology is being staged, and the founder of OpenAI is unemployed

author:Guest Business Studies

On November 17, OpenAI announced on its official website that Sam Altman (Sam Altman) will step down as CEO and leave the company's board of directors. According to the notice, the reason for the board's decision was that Sam Altman was not open enough in his communication with the board, which hindered the board's ability to perform its duties. Just today, Microsoft CEO Nadella said on social platforms that Sam Altman and his colleagues will join Microsoft to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence research team. What happened in between?, Enjoy~

There is no need to argue whether AI will lead to unemployment, because the world's best AI company, OpenAI CEO Ultraman, is unemployed.

Just the night before, OpenAI, the company that invented ChatGPT, announced that it was removing CEO Sam Altman, citing his lack of honesty in communicating with the board of directors, hindering the board's ability to perform its duties.

Just two weeks ago, Altman also announced a series of major developments at the first developer conference in OpenAI's history.

Everything was so sudden, after Ultraman was deposed, another co-creator also handed in a letter of resignation the next day. So the OpenAI founding team was almost cleaned.

Some media commented that this is 911 in the history of science and technology.

Just when we were confused, Musk laughed. He was originally the founding father of OpenAI, but he left in 2018 because of disagreements, and then he often criticized OpenAI. This time, Musk ate such a big melon, and hurriedly hung out the "job application link" on the X platform, with the text "In case someone needs it", and the careful thinking of digging people is directly written on his face and shown to everyone.

But everyone is angry, why did OpenAI remove the CEO? "Lack of honesty in communication with the board of directors" is obviously a piece of soup, not to mention that another co-creator is also gone, there must be a huge game behind this.

So far, no authoritative person has come forward to explain, but Sister Ting can provide two analytical angles for students from the clues.

The first is that the soup is not honest with the board of directors.

When OpenAI was first founded, it was a non-profit company/organization, and shareholders only invested but did not get a return. But in 2019, the company underwent a transformation from a non-profit organization to a profit-capping company, which simply means that shareholders can have a return, but not more than 100 times the original investment amount. And after the company grows to a certain stage, it can no longer get returns.

It is precisely because of this transformation that Musk chose to leave.

Why does OpenAI want to transform? Lack of money, who wants to invest in non-profit organizations. After the company's transformation, Microsoft immediately invested $1 billion, and this year it added $10 billion to become the largest investor.

Of course, in recent years, OpenAI's GPT has been overwhelming, with more than 92% of Fortune 500 companies developing products based on GPT, and ChatGPT on the C-end also has more than 100 million active users every week, and Microsoft has naturally made a lot of money.

But don't forget, there is still a red line for companies with upper profit caps, and after the company grows to a certain stage, shareholders cannot get returns. OpenAI's red line is that it meets the AGI standard, that is, artificial general intelligence. Once the board of directors of OpenAI's parent company announces an AGI agreement, Microsoft can no longer take a score.

So is OpenAI achieving AGI? It's not clear to the outside world, but there is no doubt that there must be a conflict of interest between the company's management and the capital behind it in this matter. The ousted CEO Altman and the co-creator who voluntarily resigned are both members of the board of directors.

So, that's all the information, and I won't judge.

Another analysis angle is the first OpenAI developer conference two weeks ago.

On November 6th, Ultraman announced GPTs, a GPT tool that everyone can customize exclusively, as well as the corresponding GPT store. This made ordinary users collectively cheer, and also made developers collectively cry, because the applications they used to develop based on the OpenAI platform were subverted in minutes. It's like OpenAI opened a shopping mall for rent, and the tenant paid the rent and renovated the storefront, but he announced that the mall would be self-operated and directly compete with the tenants for business.

Nearly two days after the press conference, ChatGPT went down on a large scale, and OpenAI said that it was deliberately attacked by hackers.

Another day later, Microsoft announced that it was banning employees from using ChatGPT due to security concerns.

By November 15th, Ultraman announced that the usage after the developer conference exceeded OpenAI's processing power, so the registration of the paid version was suspended.

Two more days later, Ultraman was deposed.

If AGI is a conflict of interest between management and capital, then GPTs are the company's oscillation between the two roles of charter company and self-operated store.

In the same way, the truth is up to the students to judge for themselves.

OpenAI is no less groundbreaking in this era than Apple once was.

As Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commented: "The emergence of ChatGPT is the iPhone moment in the history of AI." And the amazing coincidence of history is that Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, was also ousted by his own company, and history sometimes plays out like this.

If in a few years, Ultraman returns to OpenAI and supports the general of the building, then he will be the "second Jobs".
