Buddell and his work
Budel's father was a joiner, his mother came from a family of others, and he himself was a French realist sculptor, together with Rodin and Mayor, known as the "Three Giants of French Sculpture". His students included the famous Giacometti and Richie, and chinese audiences familiar with the art liu haisu, Pang Xuanqin, Pan Yuliang and others have also been taught by him.

Genius is just beginning

Bouder grew up in the hills of the eastern Pyrenees, a beautiful and fertile herdsmen's mountainous region, and he grew up in the environment of labor and laborers, with a rustic peasant temperament. In his artistic journey, he has always fought hard as a laborer. Influenced by his father, Buddell learned carpentry from an early school, especially wood carving, and became famous in the local area. At the age of 15, he was funded by the municipal government to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Toulouse, and eight years later, he was admitted to the Paris Academy of Fine Arts with excellent results.

<h1>Dropped out of school</h1>
In Buddell's eyes, the academic teaching of the Paris Academy of Fine Arts is lifeless, and he has always maintained his beautiful local sentiments. As a result, he dropped out of school. Poverty and loneliness ensued, and Buddell had no nostalgia for his own prospects that might have soared. In every work of his later life, this independent spirit of not agreeing with the world is permeated. Later, through the introduction of the sculptor Dalu, Buddell met the then famous sculptor Rodin, and entered his studio to become his student and assistant, and his master path began.
<h1>"Love-hate entanglement" with Rodin</h1>
He worked at Rodin Studio for 15 years. Boudre was both deeply influenced by Rodin and had considerable artistic differences with him. So they often argue with each other, but the result of the argument is that they parted ways artistically, and it does not mean ending their friendly teacher-student relationship. Until Rodin's death, Boudell loved and respected him. Buddell's works gradually "de-Rodinization" and began to explore the independent exploration of his own style, which is also the process of gradually maturing his style of works.

Tsinghua University Art Museum's upcoming exhibition "Return and Reinvention - Buddell and His Sculpture Art" will show you his masterpieces from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the twentieth century in the order of the creation time and theme of Buddell's works, including two units focusing on how Buddell got rid of Rodin's style step by step.

<h1>"Pallas" unit
"Pallas" is an alias for the goddess Athena in Greek mythology, and this phase of Buddell's creation of a series of Pallas-related sculptures and photographs was an important stage in the development of his style after entering Rodin's studio. During The first period of Boudell's work, as one of Rodin's most famous students, his work clearly continued Rodin's trajectory. Boudell personally never denied this, and believed that no teacher like Rodin could teach him the art of solving classical themes. Without Rodin, perhaps the famous Pallas in a Long Robe would not have been created.

Even though Boudre always admired Rodin, he distanced himself from his teacher artistically, which was an important step in his self-fulfillment. Also a work in the "Pallas" series, "Pallas Bust" has completely shed Rodin's style, replacing Rodin's calm with "anxious looks and wrinkle-like cracks in the face".
<h1>"Apollo" unit</h1>
The birth of the Avatar of Apollo is known as Buddell's "completion of his divorce from Rodin", and it was his true first independent work. The inherent tension between the painful expression of the artist's efforts to shape the nose and the calm rationality of the eyes, the face of the head has a Rodinian anxious look and shaping features, but it shows another sense of tragic mission like a Greek hero. This work is a watershed moment for Buddell to leave Rodin, and it is also a bold attempt by the artist to deliberately distance himself from the classical to pursue his personal style.
