When the scouts noticed that the Cui barn ahead was full of grain, Chairman Mao's eyes were full of contemplation. At this moment, the name of a Tibetan toastmaster named Yang Jiqing came to his mind. Yang Jiqing, a good official with great prestige in Zhuoni, his name spread throughout the mountains and grasslands. The land under his jurisdiction, though barren, was a peaceful hideaway, far from the strife and wars of the state.
But Yang Jiqing is not a selfish person, he knows the great righteousness of the country and the suffering of the people. After learning about the difficult situation of the Red Army, he had a conscience and a sense of mission, and secretly prepared grain and salt and put them in the Cui barn where the Red Army had to pass. He also did not forget to repair the plank road that had been deliberately destroyed by the Kuomintang to facilitate the passage of the Red Army. All this is due to his deep concern for the country and the people.
Yang Jiqing's goodwill became the key to the Red Army's battle at Lazikou. Chairman Mao ordered that the time to take Lazikou was urgent, because for every additional day of stay, the people in the interior suffered one more day. The Red Army was determined not to delay with the Kuomintang, and they divided into two teams, one straight and one back, pinching Lu Dachang's troops. In less than two days, they successfully captured Lazikou, allowing Lu Dachang to collapse and calmly flee.
The victory in the Battle of Lazikou broke the Kuomintang's encirclement and suppression of the Red Army and opened a passage for the Shaanxi-Gansu Detachment of the Red Army to go north. Chairman Mao once wrote this poem during the Long March: "I like the mountains and thousands of miles of snow, and the three armies will be happy after that." This verse describes the victory in the Battle of Laozikou. The reason why the Red Army was able to successfully move north and break through the blockade of the Kuomintang was inseparable from Yang Jiqing's help and support.
However, Yang Jiqing's good deeds attracted suppression and framing by the Kuomintang. There was a mutiny in Zhuoni, and Yang Jiqing was killed. The Red Army failed to thank him, but kept his kindness deep in their hearts.
However, Yang Jiqing's son Yang Fuxing carried on his father's legacy and continued to rebel against the Kuomintang and successfully regained power. Yang Fuxing even voluntarily ended the toast system in 532 and joined the Communist Party, becoming an honorable member of the Communist Party. His move was highly appreciated by Chairman Mao and Zhou Enlai.
The Long March is a journey full of legends and hardships. Yang Jiqing's kindness is a bright spot in this journey, and it is the epitome of many people with conscience in that era.
