In 1934, the Red Army, which had experienced the failure of the fifth anti-"encirclement and suppression" campaign, embarked on a difficult long march. When the Red Army contingent went near the Dadu River in Sichuan, the problem arose.
Their original plan was to reach Luding Bridge within three days, but the complicated terrain and dense forest forced them to stop. If no one takes them through this journey, not only will they not be able to complete the task, but they may even die there.
Faced with such a situation, the fighters were very anxious. At this moment, investigator Xiao Shijie found an old farmer in tattered clothes not far away. Seeing this person, Xiao Shijie seemed to see hope.
He rushed to the man and asked, "Fellow countryman, are you a local?" But instead of answering his question, the man pointed to his mouth and ears.
Seeing this situation, Xiao Shijie immediately reacted that the person in front of him was deaf and dumb. Because there were many examples of disguised and mixed into the ranks of the Red Army at that time, Xiao Shijie couldn't help but raise his vigilance.
He knew that if the people in front of him were pretending, they would be in danger. In order to avoid his whereabouts being exposed, Xiao Shijie had to arrange for someone to tie up the deaf and mute man.
After a period of observation, Xiao Shijie felt that this person did not look like he was pretending. So, he found a suitable set of clothes for the deaf and mute to change. Seeing that the Red Army had no malice, the deaf and mute gradually relaxed their vigilance.
The deaf man then told the soldiers that he could pass through it. Seeing that the deaf man's hand had been gesturing, the soldiers took him with him on the long march.
On the way, deaf and mute people familiar with the terrain have been taking the soldiers to cut the corner, saving the soldiers a lot of time to spend here. When they successfully arrived at Luding Bridge, the soldiers looked at the deaf and mute in disbelief.
Considering that the rest of the journey was very dangerous, the soldiers discussed and decided to give the deaf and mute some money to let him leave here and return home safely. But I didn't expect that no matter how the fighters stuffed it, the deaf and dumb refused to accept the money.
Just when the soldiers thought that the deaf and dumb were afraid of the lack of money, he stretched out his finger and pointed to the soldiers' military uniforms. The soldiers knew that he wanted to join the Red Army, but he could neither hear nor speak, which was too special.
Therefore, they patiently refused to the deaf and mute. But the deaf and mute man was never moved, and wherever the soldiers went, he silently followed behind.
In desperation, the leader agreed to let the deaf and mute follow them. In this way, a "mute comrade" appeared in the Long March team.
A large black cauldron used to save lives
As the troops passed through the snow-capped mountains, the thin air made it difficult for the heavy cooks and porters to move. Seeing this, the mute comrades took the initiative to take the large objects on their bodies and carry them to themselves.
Although the things on his body weighed hundreds of pounds, the dumb comrade never fell off the line, nor did he show a little tiredness. Although the mute comrade cannot hear it, he has his own unique coping methods when facing danger.
Every time the soldiers lay down when they encountered the bombardment, the mute comrade hurriedly picked up the iron pot and put it on himself. Under the protection of the iron pot, he escaped many dangers.
But such luck is not always there. At one time, the dumb comrades, who encountered enemy bombing, protected themselves with iron pots, as usual. Unexpectedly, because the size of the iron pot is relatively small, he only protects his upper body.
Only after the battle did the fighters see the already bloody leg where the mute comrade had been hit. Looking at the distressed expressions of the soldiers, the mute endured the pain and squeezed out a smile to comfort them.
Although he could not speak, the mute comrades had already regarded the fighters as their own family. And the big iron pot he carried not only saved his life, but also saved the lives of soldiers who were like family.
Once while passing through a meadow, a warrior accidentally stepped on a swamp. Looking at the comrades who are sinking little by little, the fighters are helpless. In order to avoid more sacrifices, the warriors caught in the swamp kept shouting to prevent others from approaching.
Faced with such a situation, the mute comrade picked up the rope and tied it to himself without saying a word. Subsequently, under the watchful eye of the soldiers, he threw the iron pot not far from his comrades in the swamp.
The soldiers knew that he was going to risk saving people and advised him to come back quickly. But he couldn't care about anything, and slashed to the warrior with an iron pot. Finally, under his desperate drag, the warrior was finally rescued.
After experiencing this, the fighters gained a new understanding of this mute comrade. After that, the relationship between the mute comrade and the other fighters became better and better, and the soldiers also treated him as family.
Hard working without complaint
In 1936, the Red Army contingent successfully reached northern Shaanxi. Since then, the mute comrades who have been integrated into the guard company of the Central Military Commission have been doing the work of carrying water and cooking.
If it were someone else, they might complain, but the dumb comrade would not. Although these are just the trivial matters of life, he has never slackened off for more than half a point.
When comrades and people in northern Shaanxi were unable to eat, drink, or lack supplies because of the severe blockade imposed on the Kuomintang, the mute comrades would take advantage of their deaf and mute characteristics to venture out to purchase supplies. Because he is a disabled person, the Kuomintang basically does not suspect.
Taking advantage of this, Comrade Dumb also passed on a lot of important intelligence to the Central Committee. However, despite such great achievements, the dumb comrade still did not forget his own work, and still worked hard to fetch water and cook in the cooking class.
After the founding of New China, Comrade Dumb followed the troops to Beijing. Because high blood pressure and other illnesses were detected during the physical examination, the division commander arranged for him to recuperate at the Invalides.
But the dumb comrades have been busy for so many years, where can they stop? So, after staying in the Invalides for half a month, he took the initiative to find the organization and request to arrange work.
Because he was so resolute, the leader had to give him a piece of land near the camp that had been abandoned for a long time and let him use it to develop the orchard. After receiving the task, the dumb comrade was very happy.
After that, both day and night, the fighters could see the busy figure of the mute comrade. In the years that followed, the mute comrade used this orchard as his "battlefield".
In 1955, the first conferral ceremony was held. Looking at the shining badges on the former comrades-in-arms, the dumb comrade could not help but give a thumbs up. Comrades know that the dumb comrade is envious, but since joining the army he has never asked for anything.
So after organizing deliberation, it was decided to give an award to the dumb comrade. In November 1955, Comrade Dumb was awarded the rank of second lieutenant of the Public Security Guard Division. At the same time, he was also awarded the Order of Bayi of the Third Class and the Order of Bayi.
In October 1971, Premier Zhou returned to Beijing from Guangzhou. When he met several leaders of the garrison, he inevitably asked about the recent situation of the mute comrade.
After receiving the answer, Premier Zhou, who was worried about the physical condition of the mute comrade, advised: "The contribution of the dumb comrade to the cause of liberation is not small, and we must not treat him badly." It is necessary not only to make good arrangements in terms of food and clothing, but also to pay attention to physical health. ”
