Libya's flood-stricken areas are difficult to rescue and there is still a risk of plague outbreaks

author:Jimu News

Severe flooding caused by Hurricane Daniel caused heavy casualties and property damage in Libya. According to the observation of reporters from the main station in several disaster-stricken areas, the relief work after the disaster still faces great challenges, and there is also the risk of plague outbreaks.

Zhu Yunxiang: From September 18, when we arrived in Benghazi, in eastern Libya, to today, we have also visited many places, including Derna, the core area of the disaster, and many important cities along the way, including Marj and Beda. On the way, we can even see the broken walls of the walls washed away by the floods, and in some places even the floodwaters have not completely receded, forming flood lakes, which are very rare in Libya, which has a consistently arid climate. Especially in Derna, almost a quarter of the area is affected, so the rescue still faces huge challenges, there is also a large gap in the rescue force, and we even see many people on the scene who have to find their own digging tools to dig the ruins of their houses.

It is not immediately clear how many bodies were buried under the rubble, either under the rubble or by the floods. Denard's daytime temperatures exceeded 30 degrees, so the risk of plague outbreaks remained. While the rescue force is tight, the local area also needs to allocate more manpower to the epidemic prevention work.

In interviews with local people, we can often hear two words "suffering", war, poverty and this flood disaster, such suffering has not been interrupted since the outbreak of the Libyan war, but who is responsible for this suffering, this is a question worth pondering.

Victims: The sight of the flood is vividly remembered

In Derna, Libya's worst-hit city, search and rescue efforts continue. In recent days, some local disaster victims have returned to their homes one after another, recalling the scene of the flood, which is still vividly remembered.

It was the home of Mohammed Badr, a Derna survivor who recalled that the water was so high that he had to cling to his family's floating couch until he was rescued hours after the floods receded. However, his brother died of excessive blood loss.

Mohammed Badr, a disaster victim in Derna: Most of my family survived, except for my brother. His arm was scratched by iron bars in the floods, and he bled a lot. But at that time, the flood blocked the door, we couldn't send him out, the door couldn't be opened.

In Derna, many victims are still waiting to hear from their missing families. But volunteers in charge of the search and rescue said that the poor situation on the ground left them clueless.

Volunteer Tariq Deifala: We [volunteers] all have relatives here, but we don't have any search and rescue clues, we don't know if they are dead or alive. Do we continue to search for the missing or give them funerals? The situation is very bad, it is a disaster.
