When Major General Flood reclined on his sickbed, recalling his short but glorious years, he still had the last regret in his heart. Although he is a well-deserved national hero who dedicated his precious time and energy to China's liberation war, he was separated from his beloved forever due to the trick of fate, which cannot but be said to be an unspeakable sorrow.
As a Vietnamese, Hung was awarded the title of Major General of both Chinese and Vietnamese nationality, and made outstanding contributions to the cause of communism, both in China and in Vietnam.
When he was young, he entered the fourth phase of the Whampoa Military Academy and was a classmate of Lin Biao and Liu Zhidan. While working in the Jin-Cha-Ji anti-Japanese base area, he met and started a family with Chen Jiange, a member of the Communist Party, and this touching transnational marriage shocked China and the world, and was blessed and expected by his mentor Ho Chi Minh.
However, this like-minded couple is not pitied by God. After the surrender of Japan, the Vietnamese Communist Party was preparing to hold an armed uprising, and a large number of excellent military generals were urgently needed, so under the decision of the superiors, Flood was transferred back to Vietnam, and the two were separated in two places.
A military talent in its infancy
Hung Hong, formerly known as Vu Yuan Bo, is a native of Hanoi, Vietnam. Although his original family was a landlord class, he was well-educated, and his thinking was always at the forefront, and he did not chase money and fame like his own family.
In 1920, he entered the Hanoi Normal School, where he was different from everyone else in his youth. He did not stick his ideals and ambitions to being a teacher, because when he was a child, he witnessed the atrocities inflicted by the French colonizers on the fertile land of Vietnam, and his father had the power and money of a landlord, but he was helpless against the invaders, so he had a firm belief from an early age: to drive the invaders out of the mainland of Vietnam!
To this end, after graduating, he went to study in Paris, France, where he met Ho Chi Minh, the mentor and friend who guided him to the path of communism.
In 1925, he went to Guangzhou with Ho Chi Minh and began the arduous exploration of the revolutionary road, joining the Vietnam Youth Revolutionary Comrades Association, during which he became acquainted with Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Mao Zedong and others.
A year later, he knew that his military knowledge was poor and he was not qualified for the tasks assigned to him by his superiors, so he decided to enter the fourth phase of the Whampoa Military Academy for further study, and was an alumnus of Lin Biao and Liu Zhidan at that time.
When the war at home had begun, he, like most of the cadets around him, joined the Kuomintang and was determined to serve it.
However, the change of situation was unexpected, and on April 12, 1927, in the April 12 counter-revolutionary coup d'état launched by Chiang Kai-shek, Guangzhou was not spared and became a base of war.
During that time, Flood clearly realized that the stubborn diseases in the Kuomintang could not be eradicated, and he had joined the wrong ranks, so he resolutely quit the Kuomintang and chose to secretly join the Communist Party and throw himself into the arms of the young revolutionary group.
In the winter of the same year, the Communist Party launched the famous Guangzhou Uprising, which exposed the identity of the Flood Communist Party, and he had to temporarily evacuate and go to Thailand with Ho Chi Minh to temporarily avoid the limelight.
The arduous and tortuous road of the Long March
In 1928, under the instructions of Ho Chi Minh, Flood once again set foot on the vast land of China, doing propaganda and civilian work in the Dongjiang guerrillas, and joined the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army the following year. During his work, he renamed himself Flood.
"Didn't the enemy scold us as a flood beast? This is the origin of his name, which means to rush like a flood in the vast sea of revolution.
In 1930, Flood was transferred to the Red Twelfth Army, which later became part of the First Front Army of the Red Army, with Zhu De as commander-in-chief. In 1933, Hong Shui was transferred to Ruijin to serve as the deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Political Department of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army School, and founded the Red Army's first drama society, the "Workers' and Peasants' Drama Society", which laid a solid foundation for the propaganda and unity of the grassroots masses of the Communist Party. The following year, he was elected by the masses to represent Annam (Vietnam) as a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Chinese Soviet Republic.
However, the good times did not last long, and just as he was gearing up to do something great, the "leftist" dogmatism in the party headed by Wang Ming swept through the Red Army units. Flood was not spared, as he was framed as a high-ranking spy because of his Vietnamese nationality and former "ex-convictions" of the Kuomintang, and was subsequently expelled from the party.
In October, the failure of the fifth anti-"encirclement and suppression" campaign officially opened the curtain of the Red Army's Long March.
The flood continued to reflect upwards, and it was hoped that we could move together with the large army. Zhu De and Liu Bocheng attached great importance to such an international friend of the Red Army, personally questioned him, ensured that he had no ideological deviations, corrected his erroneous punishment, restored his party membership, and arranged for him to continue to be responsible for propaganda work in the central column.
In 1935, after the meeting of the First and Fourth Front Armies, the Red Army was divided into two armies, the left and the right, and the flood was incorporated into the Left Route Army.
Because he followed the command and leadership of Zhu and Liu, supported the party's policy of going north, disagreed with the political views of Zhang Guotao and his faction, and opposed going south, Zhang Guotao was again charged with the trumped-up charge of "international espionage" and was expelled from the party again.
On August 20, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee held an enlarged meeting in Maoergai and asked Zhang Guotao to lead the Left Route Army to the north, but Zhang Guotao did not listen to the command of the Party Central Committee and insisted on going south, and the Party Central Committee was forced to lead the Red First and Third Front Armies and the Central Column to the north first. Under the protection of Zhu and Liu, Flood was spared from being executed, and was able to climb snow-capped mountains and cross grasslands with the Left Route Army, hoping to join up with the large army.
However, in the Battle of Ganzi, his unit was defeated and scattered, and he was forced to flee. After inquiring around and learning that Chairman Mao had arrived in northern Shaanxi with a large army, he made a bold decision: the Long March alone!
He dressed up as a Tibetan citizen, relying only on his legs and invincible will, and marched towards northern Shaanxi step by step. On the way, he spared camels, shepherded sheep, and sometimes even had to beg for food so that he would not starve to death.
In 1936, when he arrived in Yan'an, everyone saw the scrawny flood, and their hearts were filled with admiration and sighs, and no one could have any doubts about his loyalty and perseverance.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China resolutely revoked the wrongful punishment given to him by Zhang Guotao and arranged for him to study in the first department of the Chinese Anti-Japanese Red Army University.
There, like many comrades, Flood was not afraid of a difficult learning environment—a classroom built of a cave, a desk made of stones, and a wooden plank supported by a blackboard. He systematically studied Marxist-Leninist theory and military strategy and became a member of the command team of the Red Army.
Mao Zedong commented on these students, including him, "You are living a life in the Stone Age, but you are learning the most advanced theory of our time -- Marxism-Leninism!"
Romantic and tortuous love in the revolution
On July 7, 1927, the Japanese army launched an attack on the Lugou Bridge, and the "Lugou Bridge Incident" also sounded the clarion call of the National War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the CCP changed the Red Army to the Eighth Route Army. Flood was sent by the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army to cross the Yellow River with the troops and go to the Wutai Mountain area to serve as a democracy movement cadre in the Dongzhi District of Wutai County.
Fate meets here, and Flood meets his wife, Chen Jiange.
At that time, Flood was still responsible for propaganda and organizing the masses on a daily basis, but due to the lack of female comrades in the army, this was a headache for Flood. Without the cooperation of women, it becomes very difficult to carry out propaganda work, especially when communicating with women and children in the masses.
Fortunately, Flood inquired from all directions and found that there was a female comrade in the People's Administrative Committee of Wutai County, named Chen Yuying (later Chen Jiange). He called Chen Yuying to the office and entrusted her to drive and publicize women's activities, and Chen Yuying readily agreed.
In the exchange with Chen Yuying, the two deeply felt that they were like-minded with each other, and they were enthusiastically engaged in revolutionary work, and secretly felt affection in their work.
Once, Chen Yuying was very interested when she heard that Flood had changed her name, and Flood encouraged her to change a fighting name, and a name like "Chen Jiange" was born.
After Chen Jiange changed his name, his relationship with Flood became deeper, and it seems that such a name also means a new life. This is not only a rebirth for the sake of individual ideals, but also for the sake of the common ideals of the world.
In 1938, after careful consideration, the two decided to apply for marriage by making a report. The incident shocked almost everyone who knew them, because no one had ever married a foreigner in the army before.
However, Chen Jiange's elders did not hinder much, they were very open-minded, believing that Flood was a rare general, an anti-Japanese hero, which had nothing to do with nationality or career, as long as the two were of one heart and one mind, they should be blessed. So the marriage was quickly completed.
The marriage of the two is also known as "the first marriage in the Eighth Route Army".
Three years later, 130,000 enemy troops attacked Jinchaji in multiple directions, and under great pressure, Flood and Chen Jiange, who was already pregnant, were forced to move. In the middle of the transfer, Flood was reluctant to let go of his wife on the one hand, and he couldn't let go of the team on the other.
In such an anxious scene, Chen Jiange did not hesitate to let her husband focus on the army, led the troops to break through, and ruthlessly left the army with the military doctor Li Ning and hid from the enemy alone. With grief and indignation, Flood had no choice but to abandon his wife and live after death.
Just as the husband and wife Lao Yan were separated, Chen Jiange gave birth to their first daughter on a stormy night and named her "Storm". A few months later, Chen and Li were found by the search team, and Flood was both distressed and relieved to hold their daughter.
However, unfortunately, their first daughter was born relatively thin, and in such a harsh environment as the army, she could not survive, and the child died in less than half a year, which also became a pain that the couple could never let go.
Time flies, after the end of the eight-year war of resistance, the Communist Party of Vietnam is preparing to carry out the anti-war revolution, and Ho Chi Minh issued an invitation to return to China to support the war of resistance.
After careful consideration, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to send Flood back to Vietnam, because Flood was a Vietnamese and of course could not see his homeland in trouble.
He had no choice but to say goodbye to his wife, who was pregnant with Liujia, and Chen Xiaofeng, the crystallization of their love during the Anti-Japanese War, and left China to return to his homeland.
While Hung was actively involved in the Vietnam Revolutionary War, he was also concerned about China's Liberation War and his wife and children, so he entrusted a comrade to deliver letters for him and inquire about Chen Jiange's current situation in China.
However, the bad news came one after another, and what Flood was waiting for was not a reply from his wife, but the news that Chen Jiange died in the civil war. When he heard that his wife and children were killed by the bombing of the plane, he felt the pain that life was worse than death. He couldn't believe that his wife had survived the Anti-Japanese War for eight years, but she had not been able to survive the civil war, so she was separated from him by heaven and man.
Flood has never been able to forget Chen Jiange, her voice and smile can always appear in the tip of her heart. His relatives were very worried about this, fearing that he was thinking too much, so they introduced him to a woman of the right age and personality. In order not to let his family and leaders worry about him, Hung remarried Li Hengxun.
It wasn't until Flood later returned to China that he learned that Chen Jiange and his two children were alive and sound, but by then, they were no longer married.
Chen Jiange can't hurt another kind woman because of his own selfish desires, nor can he ruthlessly destroy a family that already has happiness. She spent the rest of her life in loneliness and loneliness, and she never remarried. Because her heart can no longer bloom to others, her love has been dedicated.
Founding Major General of the Dual Nationality
Flood made a remarkable contribution in the Vietnam War of Independence. He served as the chairman of the Southern War of Resistance in Vietnam, used the theories and experience he learned in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, commanded the army to resist the French invaders, and opened the first military school in the history of Vietnam - the Army School in the broad sense.
In 1948, when the Vietnam Liberation War was declared victorious, Hung was awarded the rank of major general, when he was not even 40 years old.
Although he was honored, his experience in participating in the Anti-Japanese War in China made him criticized. In order to protect him from being bullied by his surroundings, Ho Chi Minh had to send him to China again.
Once again, Flood was forced to say goodbye to his hometown and bring his family to his second hometown, China. Breathing in the familiar air, his feelings were mixed, and after many tribulations, he returned to the beginning of this dream, the beginning and the end of his ideal voyage.
In 1955, Mao Zedong personally awarded him the rank of major general. Flood - the only major general with dual nationality in history, for the happiness of the people, he gave up the wealth and glory of his original family and his hard-won love. Just like his name, he is like a flood of endless vitality and enthusiasm, always fighting, always striving, contributing to the friendly relations between China and Vietnam, and also sweating for the peace of China and Vietnam and the peace of the world.
However, the founding major general with great achievements, only one year after becoming a Chinese major general, he suffered from lung cancer and died at the age of 48.
