The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said today that preliminary reports of sudden flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Afghanistan have killed more than 200 people and damaged 2,000 homes. UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement through his spokesman on the same day, expressing his sorrow over the loss of life in the northeastern province of Baghlan.

In his statement, Guterres expressed solidarity with the Afghan people. At the same time, he extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Guterres stressed that the United Nations and its partners in Afghanistan are coordinating with the de facto authorities in order to quickly assess needs and provide emergency assistance.

According to the NGO International Rescue Committee, floods have hit at least seven provinces in Afghanistan, leaving thousands of people struggling to access basic services.

In addition, infrastructure was destroyed in the affected provinces, including roads and power lines. The organization is preparing to expand its emergency response to the affected areas.
