Apple releases iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and watchOS 10: new features coming soon
The latest version of Apple's iPhone software, iOS 17, is expected to be available for free download on supported phones next week
Apple plans to release software updates for its iPhones, iPads and smartwatches this week, adding new features and designs for compatible devices.
iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and watchOS 10, announced at Apple's developer conference in June, will bring a series of notable updates. The new system will offer improved keyboard auto-correction, so you can finally type with ease. Plus, there's a new standby mode, a contact poster, more customization options, and the biggest interface improvement for Apple Watch since its release.
Here is some important information about these updates.
When can I get updates? Typically, update downloads for iOS, iPadOS and watchOS will start around 6pm UK time (1pm New York time; 3am Sydney time). Unlike other manufacturers, all eligible Apple devices can download and install updates immediately upon release, rather than rolling out in stages.
Which devices can get updates? All Apple smartphones from the 2018 iPhone XS or newer models can install iOS 17. All tablets from the iPad Pro 10.5-inch from 2017 or the iPad (sixth generation) from 2018 and newer models can install iPadOS 17. All Apple Watches from Series 4 or newer models in 2018 can install watchOS 10.
How do I get updates? Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Install, then verify and restart to install the update. You can also install updates through iTunes on your Mac or Windows computer.
To install watchOS 10, you first need to make sure that your iPhone XS or higher is running iOS 17. Then open the Watch app on your phone, navigate to General > Software Update to start the installation. You need to put your smartwatch on the charger to complete the update.
How much does it cost to update? Apple's update is free. If someone asks you to pay for an update, it's likely a scam.
iPhone – iOS 17 Improved Keyboard Auto-Correction Apple's keyboard now finally allows you to type freely by learning your manual corrections, which should eliminate pesky spelling mistakes. When the keyboard makes a mistake, you can recover the corrected text by tapping on the underlined word. In addition, the keyboard can now predict and autocomplete entire sentences as you type, similar to features in Google's Gmail and other apps.
Contact posters, video messages, and real-time voicemail
Now you can use your own photos to make stickers
Contact posters include your photo, text, and customizable colors that will be displayed in the recipient's phone and contacts app when you make a call, allowing you to choose how to present yourself when you are in contact.
NameDrop allows you to share your contact information with another iPhone or Apple Watch by bringing it closer to it and choosing what to send. Other AirDrop file-sharing interactions use the same proximity process.
Initially only available to users in the US and Canada (BNM will update soon), the mobile app can now automatically transcribe voicemails in real-time so you can see who called and what is on your call before answering it, which is great for avoiding spam calls.
FaceTime callers can now leave a video voicemail message if the recipient isn't available. Video calls can also be made using the Apple TV box and iPhone or iPad's camera, and gestures such as an upturned balloon can also be triggered by gestures.
Standby mode, Siri only, and offline Apple Maps
With the new standby mode, when you turn your iPhone horizontally to charge, you can turn it into a smart display.
The new standby mode turns iPhone into a small smart display while charging, showing time, widgets, photos, and other information, including Siri interactions, in landscape orientation. The new option cancels the "hey" in "Hey Siri," and when activating Apple's voice assistant, you no longer need to say "Hey Siri" every time. In addition, Siri can now handle consecutive requests without having to say Siri every time.
You can save map areas in the Apple Maps app for offline access, including directions, hours of operation, and other information, which matches the long-standing popularity of Amap. Apple's Safari browser now has profiles, just as far as competitors like Chrome and Firefox. It allows you to have different bookmarks, settings, sites, and cookies, such as one for work and one for home.
Check In
Check In is a new security feature that allows you to share your location with friends or family. The system automatically detects when you arrive home and notifies them. If the system finds that you're late, it can send your contacts information including location, battery life, and other information so they can help.
iPad – iPadOS 17
Apple's tablets get most of the new features of iOS 17, plus some features designed for large-screen devices.
Customize lock screen with widgets
Now you can fully customize the lock screen, including using widgets and animated wallpapers
Last year, Apple added extensive customization features to the iPhone's lock screen, and now those features have come to the iPad. Users can add widgets, use animated wallpapers, change fonts, and other options, while dynamic activities such as flight tracking and other live events now appear on the lock screen as well.
The Health app is now also on iPad
The Health app has been exclusive to the iPhone for years, and now it's finally landing on other platforms.
Apple's long-standing health app is now also available on the iPad, where you can view data from first- and third-party apps, such as sleep tracking, activity, and more. It has a brand new tablet interface and can be used to view data trends, as well as record information such as vision or mental health.
Stage Manager multitasking improvements
Now you have the freedom to resize your apps and place them anywhere on your screen just like you would on a desktop computer
iPadOS 17 brings a series of improvements that make iPad more powerful when multitasking. Now you can freely resize app windows and place them anywhere on your desktop without being limited by specific slots like in iPadOS 16. If you connected a keyboard to your iPad, you can hold down the Shift key and tap the app icon to open the app in the current desktop space. These small updates make the iPad more like a Mac or desktop computer.
Apple Watch – watchOS 10
Apple Watch also ushered in a number of new features in watchOS 10, including NameDrop, contact posters, and more. In addition, Apple has redesigned some parts of the operating system.

The new riding feature lets your iPhone act as a replacement for your bike computer when connected to Apple Watch.
The Workouts app can now connect to Bluetooth cycling accessories, such as pedal power meters, allowing metrics such as cadence, speed, power, and power zones to be displayed and recorded. The watch can also be connected to the iPhone when it is mounted on the handlebar, showing the phone screen.
