It's been a long time since Detective Pikachu debuted on the 3DS in 2016, and the sequel, Detective Pikachu Lightning Returns, will land on NS on October 6, 2023, IGN recently interviewed Yasuki Yanagisawa, senior creative director of Creatures, to find out what's going on behind the scenes.
IGN: For the sequel to Detective Pikachu, fans have been waiting a long time. Can you share a little bit about why there is such a long gap between when it was first announced in 2019 and now?
Yasuki Yanaisawa: Yes. As you mentioned, the waiting time is indeed a bit long. The overall development and production of this game took about five years. One of the main reasons for this is the change in hardware, which we can do more thanks to the higher specifications of the hardware. It's hard to determine and figure out exactly what the developers want to do with this game.
IGN: What did you do with the new hardware during that development time?
Yasuki Yanagisawa: One of the obvious major differences between the 3DS and Switch is that the 3DS has two screens, while the Switch has only one screen. As a result, we have made significant changes to the user interface and interface. Their appearance has really changed a lot. As for the hardware specifications, since we can do more with it. For example, more Pokémon can appear on the screen at the same time. We hope this will bring "Lyme City" to life and truly expand the world where humans and Pokémon coexist.
