On 7 August 1917, British Naval Air Forces Major Edwin Harris Dunning flew a Sopwes Puppy (N6453) biplane to land on the Royal Navy aircraft carrier Fury – his second time on the deck of the carrier. Five days earlier, on August 2, Dunning piloted the "puppy" on his first attempt to land on the "Rage" in the middle of the voyage, when the aircraft carrier was sailing against the wind at 26 knots and the wind speed was 21 knots, Dunning controlled the aircraft well, and the speed of the aircraft relative to the deck when touching the deck was only a few kilometers per hour. The plane first yaw to the left, then he tried to correct it to the right, and the plane turned off the engines in time to skim over the deck, and the plane finally landed on the deck. The special feature of the "puppy" can be seen in this August 7 photo - several rope loops are installed under the lower wing, which is a temporary measure for the participants on the deck to reach out and grab if necessary to help the plane land. It was very windy that day, and the plane was pushed backwards by strong winds, with a slightly damaged tail.
Later that day, Dunning changed planes and took off again, ready to land for the third time. This time his luck was even worse, his plane was too far forward in contact with the deck, the plane was too fast, and the sudden cross wind from the left caused the plane to tilt to the left, flipping out from the deck side, and Dunning unfortunately fell into the water and died.
