 Get to know the learning wall

Walking in the university building, I was immediately fascinated by the various wall decorations, which were the first time I recognized cork boards and small billboards that could be erected and torn off phone numbers.

When I went to my neighborhood elementary school every week a year later, when I saw the varied, beautiful, vivid, and functional walls in the classroom for the first time, I silently exclaimed, "American elementary school teachers really know how to play."

I have to sincerely marvel at the versatility of American elementary school teachers. Their creativity, patience and meticulous arrangement of the various functional areas in the classroom provide a very interesting learning environment for the children. The classroom is no longer cold, and every wall seems to have a temperature, a temperature of love.

Later, I became an elementary school teacher in Massachusetts in the United States. After consulting some of the school's senior teachers, I learned to decorate bulletin boards in my classroom.

According to the function of the classroom, after purchasing boards of various sizes from the store, laying out the selected fabric, using a stapler to nail the cloth board, and then slicing suitable decorative strips on the four sides.

The size, color, placement and function of each board should be considered. From a wall decoration, through exploration and practice, I have also become a "teacher who is very good at arranging classrooms" in schools in what colleagues and parents call "a teacher who is very good at arranging classrooms".

I replaced the list of points with a bulletin board with a star sticker, and the children put up their own stickers to roll call, and I just summarized it every week. One fall, I made a scarecrow out of straw and cloth and glued it to the classroom window, amused the kids when they came in, and they learned the autumn-themed words amazingly.

 Set up a home learning wall  

I wasn't an elementary school teacher for years, thinking I was saying goodbye to the fancy wall decorations until I became a mother.

Does every profession have sequelae? My former career sequelae was my love of tearing up the walls of my home.

My experience made me realize the subtle educational role of the environment for children. I vividly remember some of the clips my professor gave us about creating an effective learning atmosphere: proper classroom settings can inspire children's desirable behaviors, and of course the walls.

So, when my child was 2 years old, I began to toss the walls at home. Just like the surprised expression of my students when they entered the classroom with their mouths wide open, every time I flipped the wall, Tongtong was very excited! For her, these are all surprises that her mother is bringing her, and she loves them.

For me, I am also happy to see my child memorizing 220 high-frequency words unconsciously, Chinese know more and more words, and the child has always maintained a strong interest in learning.

Laying out a home learning wall can not only help children acquire knowledge points, but also help children record the dynamic process of learning.

 Divide the functional areas of the child's home learning 

How to decorate your child's learning wall?

First of all, according to the layout of the house at home, the living habits of the family, and the learning habits of the children, divide the different wall functions in the home. Other people's learning walls may not be suitable for your home, you have to consider the actual situation of your own home. For example, my family has divided the following areas according to these factors.

Flashcard area (literacy, teaching game area)

When giving Tongtong an English or Chinese, I will change her new flashcards every week according to her learning situation in the flashcard bag. We will also do some flashcard-related games in front of each flashcard area, such as fly swatter games, phrase reading and sentence games, and fishing games.

Because at present, Tongtong is learning to Chinese literacy. I set up 4 card areas in my home, one in the hallway, one in the dining room, one on the bedroom wall and one on the wardrobe door.

Cooling-off zone (emotion management zone) 

For preschoolers, I highly recommend that moms create a cooling zone at home. When the child is older or no longer needed, this area can be removed.

To set a cool-off zone, moms just need to choose a quiet area, put a sign on the wall and put a chair against the wall!

Poster reading area (reading, grammar area)

I will write some posters for Tongtong according to her learning situation at different times, and paste the posters in a fixed position for display.

The poster at my home will be replaced according to Tongtong's learning situation. On the day I first put up the poster, I would take Tongtong to get to know the poster together. When she can read all the words on the poster independently, I don't care.

She thinks about it herself from time to time, sometimes on a whim, sometimes using the poster as her data search database. 

For example, when Tongtong first learned phonics, I wrote down some common phonics rules in the newspaper, and when she was fine, she liked to take a magic wand with "magic e" to read the words on the poster.

When Tongtong couldn't tell the difference between opinion and fact questions in English reading comprehension, I wrote a poster to help her understand the main points of analysis of such topics. She herself sometimes does the questions confused, will take the initiative to read in front of the poster, and then answer the corresponding questions, the effect is much better, now this kind of questions are basically no longer her stumbling block. 

When Tongtong finished learning "Four Five Fast Reading", I wrote the words she could not master on the poster with different colors, and sometimes took her to play the game of "find and see", and the rest of the time I didn't care, I didn't expect that she would sometimes read and read if she was not sensitive to words, which was a magical feeling.

There is also a poster of "Vocal Rhythm Enlightenment", which is posted on the wall of the entrance area.

When the one-sided display couldn't meet the demand, I bought another pile of perforated posters and hung them behind the door of the study...

There is also a large whiteboard and a small blackboard at home, mainly because I think Tongtong has different feelings of writing and drawing, and can use both whiteboard pens and chalk.

Secondly, it is said that it is a learning wall, it can also be a learning door or a learning window, and the wall, cabinet door, and door in the home can be assigned functions according to demand.

For example, the wardrobe door of my house, the front and back of the door of the study, the front and back of the bedroom door, and the back of the door have corresponding "learning wall" functions.

Third, the functional area of each learning wall can maintain a fixed function, and some functional transformations can be made according to actual needs. With the improvement of the awareness of Tongtong rules, my family's cooldown zone has not been needed for a long time. However, Tongtong's current word recognition needs to be strengthened, so I set up the cooling-off zone into a word card recognition area.

However, what surprised me was that sometimes when Tongtong made a mistake, or when I asked her to calm down, she would take the initiative to run to the calm zone to calm down, and seeing the child so "self-reflecting", the anger I was about to raise was immediately extinguished.

Thanks to the calming zone that was set up, it has been helping Tongtong and me to return to calm for a long time, and promote our own introspection or reflection.

Finally, let's introduce the good things I used to set up the learning wall!

Powerful glass whiteboard: can display Chinese flashcards, help children accumulate English vocabulary, calculus math problems, children doodle at will, etc., and it is also very convenient to erase.

Cork board: My home uses to display the artwork of the baby, paste photos~

Felt board/felt cloth: When buying, the merchant will give Velcro stickers, which are not suitable for sticking in places with wallpaper wallpaper.

Transparent card pocket: This light weight makes it easier to fix to the wardrobe door with blue butyl gum.

Landing gum: similar to double-sided adhesive, pasting some learning cards, the stickiness is very good, and it is easy to take off.

Non-marking nails: do not hurt the wall, different sizes and styles of bearing capacity are different.

Hook behind the door: There are many styles on a certain treasure, and the necessary small items are stored behind the door.

Soft magnet: Soft magnet is attached to the back of a word card or page, and can be pasted behind a door, refrigerator, or other metal objects that can be magnetically adsorbed.

I want my child to be a curious person. People who are curious tend to be more driven.
