The Church of Kchhola is a monument in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is immersed in the Malpasso Reservoir all year round and is full of mystery.

In the past, people had to wade through the water or take a boat to get around. Recently, however, there hasn't been much water in the reservoir, so people can see it all on their legs.

The church of Kchula was built in 1564 and is almost 460 years old. Quechora is located between central Mexico and Guatemala. The builders of the church believed that there was potential room for development, so they built the church into a 16-meter-tall and 61-meter-long behemoth to attract European immigrants to settle here.

The ideal is full, the reality is skinny. Due to the average annual precipitation of 3,000 mm in Kchula, frequent flooding severely limits the development of the town. After the church was built, there were no resident pastors inside, and the locals had to invite pastors from other regions to hold religious activities here, which barely functioned.

The unfortunate thing is not over. In 1776, a plague broke out in southern Mexico, turning Kčula into an empty city and abandoning churches. After the completion of the Malpathso Dam in 1966, the church built on the banks of the Grihawar River was partially submerged. After years of immersion, the interior of the building was gradually destroyed and turned into ruins.

Since August 2022, precipitation in Central America has begun to be lower than usual, and the water level in the Malpasso reservoir has been declining. By June of this year, the church was completely exposed. It stands atop a dry riverbed, as if telling people about their past. But tourists are so interested here that they climb into the gaps in the church and complete their pilgrimage.
