Sweden's Volvo Group recently announced that it will build a heavy-duty truck manufacturing plant in Mexico.
The heavy-duty truck plant in Mexico will further complement Volvo's heavy-duty truck production in the U.S. and better support Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks' growth plans in the U.S. and Canadian markets, as well as Mack Trucks sales in Mexico and Latin America. The plant is expected to start operations in 2026.
It is reported that the main heavy-duty truck production bases of the Volvo Group in North America are the Lehigh Valley plant in Pennsylvania, USA, and the New River Valley plant in Virginia, USA. Volvo has invested more than $73 million in the expansion of its Lehigh Valley plant over the past five years and plans to invest $80 million in future production. The New River Valley plant is completing a $400 million expansion to accommodate the new Volvo VNL models. Volvo Group's heavy-duty truck plant in Mexico will cover an area of approximately 158 square meters and will be a complete assembly plant for traditional heavy-duty trucks, including body production and painting.
Volvo has attracted much attention for the launch of its new VNL heavy-duty truck series in the United States, which is scheduled to be mass-produced in the United States in the third quarter of this year. However, the Volvo Group's heavy-duty truck plant in Mexico does not plan to produce the truck for the time being, and the main products of the Mexican plant will be Volvo trucks and Mack trucks.
The Volvo Group said that the Mexican market has performed strongly recently, and the Volvo Group is involved, and the future prospects are promising. The larger U.S. market is also expected to maintain steady sales before and after 2027 emission standards. Volvo is currently reluctant to say which city the plant will be located in. It is understood that there are already a number of Volvo Group competitors with production plants in Mexico.
Daimler North America Trucks has two plants in Mexico, the SaltilloSaltillo plant, which was completed in 2009 to produce Daimler's Freightliner Cascadias, and the Santiago Tianguistenco plant, which started production in 1991. Navistar opened the Escobedo assembly plant in 1998. Paccar manufactures Peterbilt trucks in Mexicali, Mexico.
