Hot new jobs with six-figure salaries: AI cue engineering

You won't be rewarded for guessing that search interest in the phrase "AI will take my job" has skyrocketed over the past six months. As of the end of 21 2022, the term had 100 search interests, but by the end of <> this year, Google had a search interest of <>, which is its highest ranking.

This surge in curiosity could be driven by the launch of ChatGPT in <> 2022, the now-famous AI chatbot model developed by OpenAI. Concerns are accelerating as technology leaders express serious concerns about the technology.

In May, "Godfather of AI" Geoffrey Hinton announced his resignation from Google, saying he now regrets his job and that some of the dangers of AI chatbots are "pretty scary." Hinton noted, "As far as I know, they're no smarter than we are right now. But I think they will come soon.

His concerns were echoed by the AI Safety Center's recently released AI Risk Statement. The statement, signed by a group of top AI researchers, engineers and CEOs, said that "mitigating the risk of AI extinction should be a global priority, along with other society-scale risks such as epidemics and nuclear war."

What the average worker wants to know now is whether they will still have a job in a few years. This is not a new fear – in fact, jobs have been lost to technological advances. For example, a century ago, most of the world's population was engaged in agriculture.

Professional services firm Accenture believes that 40% of working hours could be affected by generative AI tools, a Goldman Sachs study that suggests that generative AI tools could affect as many as 30 billion full-time jobs worldwide.

However, it's not all bad news, nor is it long-term news: the World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that 97 million new jobs will emerge by 2025, enabling humans and machines to work together.

One of those roles is rapid engineering. This refers to the process of designing and optimizing prompts to achieve the desired results when using large language models such as ChatGPT.

Prompt engineers are critical because their skills are critical to producing well-defined prompts that have the precision needed to deliver the correct type of output. As with all skills, rapid engineering requires practice, especially when it's an emerging field.

Currently, there are few experts, but OpenAI is looking to change that with its free ChatGPT developer tips engineering course. Designed to teach rapid engineering best practices for application development, participants will also discover new ways to use large language models, including how to build custom chatbots, and will receive hands-on exercises on writing and iterating on prompts using OpenAI APIs.

The field is only going to grow, with LinkedIn data showing a 36-fold increase in the number of jobs mentioning "generative AI" compared to 2022, and the number of job postings containing the word "GPT" increased by 51% between 2021 and 2022.

Although rapid engineering doesn't necessarily require programming or specific technical skills, salaries are high, reportedly between $230,000 and $335,000 in the United States.

For those with existing skills, now is a great time to work in the field of artificial intelligence. The Digital Europe initiative (DIGITAL) is investing in learning and training opportunities that will create new AI experts with a total of €198 million in funding for its objectives and specific subject areas.
