160 Puerto Natales

Peurto Natales

➡️ Where: Located in the south of Chile, it takes 3 hours by long bus from Punta Arenas

➡️ Recommended travel time: 2 days

➡️ For many travelers, Puerto Natales is just a stopover for trekking to Bainei National Park, where the most you can do is store your luggage, restock your gear at the outdoor store, and eat here after the hike.

But don't lose sight of the fact that this is Patagonia! Being able to "ride a horse like a gaucho in Patagonia" is an option on the bucket list of many European and American travelers.

In 1520, Captain Magellan led a fleet to the western bay of Argentina, and after landing, he saw the aborigines wearing a kind of animal skin shoes and stepping on the beach with huge footprints, so Magellan called the natives Patagon, which also became the origin of the name Patagonia. Patagonia covers an area of about 780,000 square kilometers and occupies the southern tip of the South American continent, and the main landscape is glaciers, snow-capped mountains, lakes, coupled with soaring eagles and endless winds, which makes the words "end of the world" suddenly have a sense of picture.

Back to horseback riding. Pingo Salvaje is the most famous horse farm in Puerto Natales, and you can book horseback riding trips from 1 hour to several days. There are only two types of horses here, Arabian and Creole, both known for their endurance. If you are proficient in riding, after passing the assessment, you can "gallop like the wind in a silver saddle". If you are a novice, you can also walk through the mountains and forests in a "horse's nose touching the ponytail" way led by a Gaucho cowboy. Gaucho cowboy is a collective term for South American cowboys, and if you want to distinguish South American and North American cowboys, just look at the hat. Gaucho cowboys like to wear a soft beret and North American cowboys like to wear hard-shell rolled cowboy hats, and besides that, they are all equally handsome.

Take a half-day trip as an example, after leaving the horse farm, ride up the hillside full of wildflowers. The first stop is the Condor Observation Deck, and if you are lucky, you can see more than a dozen Andean condors. Then continue to the cliffside overlooking Lake Sofia, where you also gain a view of the condor. The wind howling in my ears brings all the information of freedom.

In addition to horseback riding, you can also go hiking and follow the path next to Salto Grande Waterfall to the Cape Peak Observation Deck. The roadside sign depicts the wind god emitted by the cape, which reminds you that the wind here is really strong! Lake Nordenskjö is separated from the Cape Peak Observation Deck, and the wind rolls the lake into a mist, which is usually white and sometimes colorful due to the moment of sunlight.

➡️ Wind tip: When you encounter a wind, poke your trekking poles on the ground and lower your center of gravity by half-squatting.

➡️ Journey Feeling: Pingo means horse and Salvaje means to roam freely, and together they become the core concept of this horse farm: to inspire happiness in a natural, self-centered environment. In fact, this outdoor concept can also be applied to life, when you encounter a problem that cannot be solved, you may wish to let your brain go first.
