Beijing: The Ghost of Sound Internationalism: "Voice of the Malayan Revolution" in China, 1969-1981

Time: Friday, May 26, 15:00

Location: Conference Room of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Liberal Arts, 4th Floor, Southeast Floor of Humanities and Social Sciences Library, Tsinghua University, No. 30 Shuangqing Road, Haidian District

Speaker: ZHANG Ling (Assistant Professor, Department of Film and Media Studies, State University of New York at Purchis)

After twelve years of operation, the MCC secret radio station "Voice of the Malayan Revolution" in Sifangshan, Yiyang, Hunan Province, stopped broadcasting on 30 June 1981. The Voice of the Malayan Revolution is broadcast in four languages: Mandarin, Malay, English, and Tamil; There are also different dialects Chinese, such as Hokkien, Hakka, and Teochew. The station's multilingual programs are translated, edited and broadcast by more than 100 employees. These workers were multi-ethnic Malayan revolutionaries, including Chinese, Malays, Indians, who worked closely with Chinese technicians. The "Voice of the Malayan Revolution" radio not only inspires MCP fighters in the jungle, but is also welcomed by different ethnic groups and Chinese mainland youth in Southeast Asia. Using the "Voice of the Malayan Revolution" as an example, this paper explores how radio as a "dematerialized" sound/auditory technology and medium can convey "sound internationalism" because it can transcend linguistic, ethnic, and national boundaries to construct intimate emotional and intellectual connections with geographically distant and dispersed listeners, and inspire their spirits and actions. This paper also further analyzes how the history and practice of the "Voice of the Malayan Revolution" reveal the historical relations and geopolitical changes between China and Southeast Asian countries, old and new colonial forces, and after the "Cold War".

Guangzhou|Harmony without Mixing: Literature and Events in the Study of Chinese Philosophy

Speaker: Cheng Lesong (Professor, Department of Philosophy, Peking University)

In the methodological sense of philosophical reflection, keeping a distance from concrete experience seems to be taken for granted. However, for the early Chinese thinkers, there was a relationship between literature and affairs. Reason for departing from things is falsehood, and unreasonable things cannot stand. This kind of reasoning is not only a basic ideological position, but also a method of thinking. One of its important consequences is that the study of early Chinese thought has always challenged not the question of philosophy, but the question of "what is philosophy?" How the variable and rich experience can be fused with preconceived and hard-won rationality into an orderly expression can be a perspective for our inquiry into early Chinese philosophy.

The World Origins of Enlightenment Thought: Cross-Border Travels in Long 18th-Century European Literature

Location: Tencent Meeting (ID: 694247029), WeChat video account of the Department of Philosophy, East China Normal University

Speaker: Jin Wen (Professor, Department of Chinese, East China Normal University and School of International Chinese Language and Culture)

Much research has focused on Western translations of Eastern texts and Oriental knowledge and anecdotes written by Westerners, but little is known about the path and depth of influence of Eastern thought after entering European languages. American historian Jonathan Israel has proposed that Enlightenment thought is largely derived from Spinoza's pantheistic ideas and theological-political theory, but in what sense is Spinoza related to Eastern thought and has he been "influenced" by it? This is one of the core problems of our research on the "Eastern Enlightenment", and there are many other similar problems. In light of these difficult problems, it is likely that we will need to leave the field of intellectual history for a short time and delve into 18th-century European literature, and the popular narrative genres of the 18th century often suggest new ideas for solving these difficult problems. This lecture will focus on two or three 18th-century European novels and how cross-border travel in literature can help us reinterpret the constitutive "influences" of Eastern culture on Western modernity.

The story of travel - "Tomb Robbery Notes", fan economy and fictional issues

The online novel "Tomb Robbery Notes" has not only inspired a large number of fan writing, but also driven the trend of fan tourism, and is one of the hot spots of China's "Holy Land Tour". The on-the-ground representation of fictional stories is an important part of cross-media narratives, reminding us to reflect on the traditional definition of "fiction" and how "imagination" has become the new frontier of capital exploitation. This lecture combines the analysis of fan tourism in "Tomb Robbery Notes", combs out the reflections on the fictional discussion of American philosopher Kendall Walton in narratology, introduces the intersection of space studies and narrative research, the convergence of tourism studies and fan studies, and finally explores the complex relationship between fiction and contemporary capitalism with the distinction between "world" and "reality" by French sociologist Luc Boltanski.
