Aloe marlothiimarlothii, also known as mountain aloe vera or flat-flowered aloe vera, is a large, single-stemmed southern African aloe vera commonly found in rocky and open flat areas, occasionally growing up to 6 meters tall.

Named after German-born South African botanist Rudolf Marloth, this aloe vera has particularly large and robust hard, gray-green leaves. These leaves can reach up to 1.5 m in length and are usually densely covered with short spines on the lower surface of the convex and less on the upper surface of the concave. Like many other tree aloe vera species, this aloe vera is more prickly when small, and as it becomes taller and less grazing, it loses many of the thorns on the surface of its leaves. It usually has a trunk that is densely covered with withered old leaves.

The inflorescence is a multi-branched panicle with up to 30 or 50 racemes. The color of the flowers varies greatly, ranging from yellow to orange (the most common) to bright red. Flowering takes place during the winter months, as is the case with most aloe vera.

The unique horizontal branching of its inflorescence is a simple way to distinguish this species from other aloe vera. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as aloe vera flatflower. (However, the type known as aloe vera glasses has higher, less horizontal inflorescences.) The dense flowers all tend to point upwards from the racemes. When not flowering, it can easily be confused with the closely related Zimbabwean aloe vera as well as the southern looking Cape aloe vera and African aloe vera species.
