Affected by the El Niño phenomenon and climate warming, the drought in Zimbabwe in southeast Africa is still continuing, resulting in a sharp decline in the country's food production, and more than 2.7 million people are facing food shortages.
Mandisley, 70, is a farmer on the outskirts of Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. It's corn harvest time, but she's worried. Due to the dry weather, the corn in the field is close to wilting, and the yield has also dropped sharply. Last harvest, Mandisley's family harvested 14 tonnes of corn, but now they have to worry about feeding the family.
According to local media, Zimbabwe's drought is caused by a combination of El Niño and global warming, with more than 80% of the country receiving below-normal rainfall. More than 2.7 million people out of a population of about 15 million in Zimbabwe face food insecurity as a result of widespread food losses.
Last week, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared that the drought threatened the country's food security and that the country was in a state of disaster, leaving the country with a food deficit of about 680,000 tonnes to be filled by imports. According to preliminary assessments, Zimbabwe needs to invest more than US$2 billion (14.5 billion yuan) to ensure food security. He called on the international community, United Nations agencies and others to help Zimbabwe tide over the difficult situation.
