There are still more than 3 months to go before the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and on the 8th local time, a French foundation said that according to the six-month monitoring data, the water pollution of the Seine River is still very serious, the number of E. coli and enterococci is seriously exceeded, and there is a potential danger in the water for events.
The French Surfers Foundation said they monitored the Seine for six months from September last year to March this year. Data show that E. coli and enterococci levels in the water of the Seine are twice as high as the highest standards of the European Union and the International Olympic Committee, and sometimes even triple. One agency said that water races in the Seine can only be held in dry weather or with little rainfall.

It is reported that the Seine River will play an important role during the Paris Olympics, and the opening ceremony will be held here on July 26, local time, followed by marathon swimming, triathlon and other competitions. In order to improve the water quality of the Seine, Paris spent 90 million euros to build the "Austerlitz Reservoir", which is 30 meters deep and can hold 46,000 cubic meters of wastewater. Previously, due to the old sewerage network in Paris, rainwater would overflow the pipes and flow into the Seine whenever there was heavy rainfall. Once completed, the reservoir will collect wastewater and rainwater, pipeline it to a treatment plant, and return it to the Seine after the water quality is up to standard.
The French government has been working hard to improve the water quality of the Seine River in recent years, and in the past decade, the related investment in the Paris region alone has reached 1.4 billion euros (about 11 billion yuan). To prove the safety of the river, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and French President Emmanuel Macron have previously promised to swim in the Seine before the Paris Olympics begin.
