The drought caused a 36% loss of capacity at the Afobaka Hydropower Plant, Suriname's only large-scale hydroelectric power facility.
With the normal flow of the Suriname River, the average annual power generation of the Afobaka hydropower plant reaches more than 70% of the total electricity generation of Suriname.
A few days ago, the reporter of the main station came to the Afobaka Hydropower Station, which is more than 1 kilometer long, and the hydropower facility with a length of more than 1 kilometer seems very calm, and there is no rumbling sound of the unit, nor can you see the waves in the drainage holes. Due to the ongoing drought, the water level in the Afobaka reservoir has dropped to a very low state. Suriname's Ministry of Natural Resources recently told the media that due to the reduction of water sources, the water level of the reservoir is still falling, and power production may be more affected in the future, resulting in an energy crisis.

The current severe drought has also led to frequent fires in Suriname, which is rich in tropical rainforests, and threatens the safety of the power transmission and transformation system.
The hissing sound of the flames can be heard from 60 meters away, and the problem caused by the flames is not only the burning of vegetation, but also the threat to other infrastructure. For example, next to the flame, there is a wooden telephone pole, and there is a small transformer above the wooden pole.
Recent data released by the government of Suriname shows that the country's electricity consumption has increased by 11% since the end of last year due to unusually high temperatures. In order to alleviate the pressure on power supply, the Surinamese government has invested 1.5 billion Surinamese dollars (about 310 million yuan) to expand the production capacity of oil-fired power generation facilities.
