The regurgitated sandpiper is a medium-sized wader with a body length of 40–45 cm. The mouth is black, slender and upturned. The feet are also long and bluish grey.
It inhabits lakes, ponds and swamps in plains and semi-desert areas, and sometimes in seaside ponds and saline swamps.
In China, it is distributed in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and other provinces, and winters in southern Tibet, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hong Kong.
