The euglandina rosea is a medium-sized snail in the genus Acorn snail. It is a carnivorous snail that can swallow smaller snails directly, or it can sneak in through shell crevices to feed large snails and also prey on slugs.
Distribution
The snail is native to the southeastern United States and has now been introduced to many countries and regions around the world. The main countries are:
North America: United States (southeastern region: Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, California, Florida), Bahamas, Bermuda.
Pacific: Hawaii, Kiribati, French Polynesia, American Samoa, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Palau, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Papua New Guinea, Borneo.
Africa: Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion.
Asia: Taiwan, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Andaman Islands.
Propagation method
Rose snails emerge day and night, often hidden in places that are difficult for people to find, and are easy to spread. Its propagation is characterized by the absence of a specific host.
When the weather is dry, the animals shrink into their shells and secrete a white mucus membrane that seals the shell and goes into a dormant state to survive the harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, the snail has strong adaptability to the environment and is easy to establish populations in new habitats.
Danger
The rose snail is a member of the List of the World's 100 Most Destructive Invasive Species published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It poses a serious threat to local fauna, causing a sharp decline in the number of native snail species in invasive areas, leading to the extinction of native species.
In 1974, to control the increasingly rampant African land snails, the inhabitants of Moorea Island introduced the carnivorous Florida rose snail. Self-defeatingly, rose snails were not interested in African land snails, but instead used the originally scarce tree snails as a delicacy, which eventually led to the endangerment of tree snails.
In order to prevent the introduction of the epidemic and protect agricultural production and ecological security, in April 2021, the Joint Announcement No. 413 of the General Administration of Customs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs came into effect, listing rose snails in the List of Quarantine Pests entering the Territory of the People's Republic of China.
Customs is in action
☑ It is forbidden to send or bring pests into the country. Once discovered, it will be destroyed. Where prohibited imports are introduced due to special needs such as scientific research, an application must be made in advance and approved by the General Administration of Customs.
☑ Strict port quarantine is implemented for goods, means of transport, loading containers, packaging, etc. from the rose snail epidemic area, and quarantine measures are taken in accordance with the law once the above harmful organisms are found.
☑ Regular monitoring is carried out around ports and freight yards, and the occurrence of foreign pests at ports of entry is detected in a timely manner, and the epidemic situation is eradicated at the first time.
☑ Track the occurrence of overseas plant epidemics, timely carry out risk assessments, issue risk warnings and take preventive measures for overseas plant outbreaks.
