Recently, a large number of dead fish have appeared in the middle reaches of the Oder River, a river bordering Germany and Poland. Peter Neznanski, director of environmental policy at WWF's Polish office, said the massive fish deaths appeared to be caused by toxic chemicals being discharged into the Oder River, where drought-induced river water levels have exacerbated the dangers to fish. Several areas on Germany's border with Poland have warned people around the Oder river to avoid swimming in the river and not eating Hanoi fish until the cause of the mass fish death is identified.
