The Riau Islands are rich in bauxite, tin, oil, coral, natural rubber, pepper, casuarina, rice and fish, and the economy is relatively developed.

During the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, the Riau Islands, natuna Islands and the Anambas Islands all came under the jurisdiction of the Daming Old Port Xuanwei Division.
