Born in Marion, Arkansas in 1865, he studied at the University of Tennessee, the St. Louis Academy of Fine Arts at Paul Haney and John Frye, and the Atelimir Julian in Paris, where his painting style was influenced by Early Impressionism.
When Benjamin Chambers Brown moved west from St. Louis to Pasadena in 1896, he shifted his attention from still life and portraiture to capturing local landscapes, known for depicting natural scenes, with local artists calling him "Dean of Pasadena Painters" and "Patriarch of Pasadena." ”
