Egusi means "melon" in Nigerian, and the Yoruba people made a soup from melon seeds many years ago and named it "Egusi". However, some theories suggest that it actually originated from the Igbo.
Not only in Nigeria, but also in the food culture of Cameroon, Mali, Ghana and many African countries, you can see "Egusi" in the country.
The grated melon seeds are made into a thick soup, and then added to the beef and lamb, fish, vegetables and condiments, which is called "Egusi". Because of the melon seeds, it carries a unique nutty and spicy taste.
Nigeria often eats Egusi soup during celebrations and festivals, and it is one of the most popular delicacies in the country.
Egusi and Fufu are the perfect lunch combination in Nigeria.
