author:Southern Metropolis Daily

Among the 18 cultural and creative masks launched by Nandu and Kobayashi Comics, Cao Xue took a look at the one with the words "Greater Future of the Greater Bay Area" printed on it. Living in Guangzhou, the central city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, for more than 20 years, Cao Xue has a deep affection for the Bay Area: "As a member of the Greater Bay Area, I am full of expectations for its development. ”

A few days ago, the first "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Shopping Festival" is in full swing, the Southern Metropolis Daily and N Video launched the Greater Bay Area Shopping Festival "Bay People One Heart, Cover the Beautiful Future" I endorse the mask relay activity for the Greater Bay Area, and Cao Xue, chief designer of the mascot "Ice Pier" of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, also joined in, offering blessings for the joint construction of a better Greater Bay Area, and also using practical actions to call for the Greater Bay Area.

Talk about the Bay Area

Always have confidence in the design of the Greater Bay Area

Walking into Cao Xue's office, you can see the neat desk, in addition to design books, there are also design drafts being created. Although he is nearly old, he still insists on creating, "every year to produce works." "I don't want to tell you that I now think about what my next task is every day, whether I can maintain my enthusiasm for creation and continue to serve the society."

This creation, in a blink of an eye, more than twenty years have passed. When recalling the experience of coming to Guangzhou from Jiangnan again, Cao Xue said: "I have never regretted choosing to work and live in Guangzhou. ”

During the years of living in his "second hometown", he fully felt the openness and inclusiveness of the city and even the entire Greater Bay Area; and the influence of this land on him was also silent. "The leaders and experts of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee once told me that Guangzhou, as a frontier city of reform and opening up, does not seem to be virtual, because everything we design reflects the cutting-edge concept and pattern."

Cao Xue was interviewed by a reporter from the Nandu Education Alliance.

"I often say a word to designers and students: we should have a high vision and a low stature." Cao Xue told reporters that the Greater Bay Area also has this feature. In terms of "high vision", it has unique advantages and conditions, and has both an international vision; in terms of "low stature", the cities in the Greater Bay Area have an open mind and a strong sense of service.

As a designer, Cao Xue has also witnessed the development and growth of art design in the Greater Bay Area. "Designers from Hong Kong and Macao have great influence in the world, Shenzhen has been named the capital of design, and Guangzhou's contribution to the design industry in the Bay Area is also obvious to all." He said that the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts is also a member of the Greater Bay Area, shouldering the mission of "educating people for the party and educating talents for the country", basing itself on the Bay Area and serving the Bay Area. "I have always been confident in the design and design education in the Greater Bay Area."

Talk about cultural creation

Nandu cultural and creative masks have the effect of transmitting emotions

Bay everyone is united in the future! A few days ago, the Southern Metropolis Daily and Kobayashi Manga launched 18 kinds of cultural and creative masks, in order to show the beauty of perseverance, optimism and progress in the anti-epidemic life. Cao Xue also put on the cultural and creative mask and participated in the "I speak for the Greater Bay Area" relay activity launched by the Southern Metropolis Daily and N Video to cheer for the beautiful Greater Bay Area.

"I don't think there's too much collaboration like that, it's too little." Cao Xue praised the cultural and creative products.

Cao Xue put on the Nandu Cultural and Creative Mask and participated in the "I Speak for the Greater Bay Area" relay activity launched by the Southern Metropolis Daily and N Video.

"It has been nearly two years since the outbreak of the epidemic, and the masks we wear every day can be changed so that everyone can feel the care of each other and remind each other to do more effective protection." In Cao Xue's view, masks are also a medium, and Nandu's cultural and creative masks have played a role in transmitting emotions.

He told reporters: "I hope this is a good start, and I hope that there will be more masks that increase communication and reflect love in the future." ”

Talk about design

Tell the story of China and the story of the Bay Area with the beauty of design

In the blink of an eye, it has been two years since the "ice pier" was officially unveiled. Today, there are less than half a year left before the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Cao Xue is also very much looking forward to this: "As IOC President Bach said, I hope that 'Ice Pier' will become a goodwill ambassador and spread friendship and even Chinese culture to the world." ”

"I'm ashamed to say, I'm not good at any sport, I didn't expect to support sports in a different way and spread the spirit of sports." Recalling the birth process of the "ice pier", Cao Xue said with a smile. It is understood that at present, he and his team are still working around the clock to design related products for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Cao Xue hopes that more young people will take the initiative to serve the construction of the Bay Area.

In fact, with the continuous strengthening of the motherland and the continuous strengthening of national self-confidence, Chinese cultural elements have become more and more popular with designers and the market in the field of art design and cultural and creative industries. So, does good Chinese design have to have Chinese cultural elements?

"I raise my hands in favor of promoting Chinese culture. Because when there is communication, communication and understanding between cultures, this exchange is really valuable and meaningful. However, Cao Xue also believes that good Chinese design is best to find the roots of Chinese culture, rather than simply adding visual elements of Chinese culture. After all, no culture is created, but grown, and the source of its growth can always be found.

"If designers and students can truly understand how Chinese live, how to see the world, how to express, and then translate this understanding into visual language, the inheritance and output of this culture will be more meaningful." Cao Xue said: "I hope that our designers can really read China, read Chinese traditions, and then carry it forward and go to the world." ”

Since 2017, Cao Xue has traveled to London, Milan, Paris and other international metropolises with the "Outside the Tower" series of design-related exhibitions, telling Chinese stories well with the beauty of design, and has had a wide impact in the academic industry. Whenever he saw the look of joy in the eyes of the people who watched the exhibition, Cao Xue was even more firm in his belief: if Chinese design wants to go global, it must find a suitable visual language, which contains the roots of traditional Chinese culture.

In addition, in his view, today's era requires not only designers to discover and solve problems, but also to learn to build problems, that is, to create requirements. What kind of design is needed for the future society and the market is a question for designers in the Bay Area to think about.

Therefore, Cao Xue also hopes that students in the Greater Bay Area and young designers can clarify the purpose of learning, "only after the purpose can there be a direction, and only after there is a direction can there be motivation." He hoped that more young people would take the initiative to serve the construction of the Bay Area, create a new pattern of design and development in the Bay Area, and tell the story of China and the Story of the Bay Area with better design.
