CARIAD chose Qualcomm to empower Volkswagen's future autonomous driving solutions

Qualcomm Highlights

CARIAD selected the Snapdragon Ride platform System-on-Chip (SoC) for its unified, scalable software platform

Custom SoCs are a key element of CARIAD's ability to provide competitive autonomous driving capabilities for all volkswagen Group passenger car brands

Such a collaboration is the first of its kind for CARIAD and is essential for the Volkswagen Group to incorporate perfectly matched hardware into its software platform around 2025

Hilgenberg, CEO of CARIAD, said: "Qualcomm Technologies' high-performance SoC is the perfect choice for us to provide autonomous driving capabilities to customers around the world."

CARIAD chose Qualcomm to empower Volkswagen's future autonomous driving solutions

CARIAD, a software company owned by the Volkswagen Group, today announced that it will select Qualcomm Technologies to provide system-on-chips (SoCs) for CARIAD's software platform, aiming to enable assisted driving and autonomous driving functions up to L4 levels. Qualcomm Technologies' Snapdragon Ride platform portfolio, SoCs, will be an important hardware component of CARIAD's standardized scalable computing platform, designed to support models launched by the Volkswagen Group from around 2025.

DIRK Hilgenberg, CEO of CARIAD, said:

The connected autonomous vehicle of the future will be a high-performance computer on wheels, which will be supported by extremely complex computing power. With our autonomous driving solutions, CARIAD is committed to getting customers' hands off the wheel in the future. Our software and Qualcomm Technologies' high-performance SoCs are the perfect match that will bring a whole new automotive experience to customers around the world.

Nakul Duggal, senior vice president and general manager of automotive business at Qualcomm Technologies, said:

By providing the open, programmable Snapdragon Ride platform, we look forward to supporting CARIAD and its suppliers in providing scalable and safe autonomous driving capabilities for Volkswagen Group's cars." As innovation accelerates and complexity increases, our close collaboration with CARIAD will not only help achieve aggressive time-to-market goals, but will also lead to a safe and reliable autonomous driving experience.

The choice to partner with a semiconductor industry leader like Qualcomm Technologies is the first time for CARIAD to help CARIAD define the high-performance computing chips needed for its platform and match its software needs. Under the leadership of CEO Herbert Diess, the Volkswagen Group released the NEW AUTO strategy last year, which aims to lead the Group into the future of autonomous driving and sustainable mobility. Looking ahead, the Volkswagen Group's business will cover everything from automobile manufacturing and sales, to the production of battery cells and the provision of energy services, to the provision of mobility solutions and the development and continuous updating of software.

With Qualcomm Technologies' high-performance SoCs, the Volkswagen Group will offer a range of safe and scalable autonomous driving functions. CARIAD will use the Snapdragon Ride platform portfolio SoC to optimally meet the needs of the software developed by CARIAD.

Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice President and President of Qualcomm Europe/Middle East and Africa, Qualcomm Technologies, said:

We are proud to support CARIAD through the Snapdragon Ride platform, enabling the Volkswagen Group to launch models that meet the requirements of autonomous driving from NCAP (New Vehicle Evaluation Code) to L4 level from around 2025."

Klaus Hofmockel, senior vice president of hardware development at CARIAD, said:

Finding the best balance between scalability, cost, and performance was one of the biggest challenges we faced in designing new high-performance computing platforms. Qualcomm Technologies' comprehensive and scalable SoC portfolio combines energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness while delivering extremely efficient computing performance.

CARIAD develops autonomous driving capabilities up to L4 based on the Snapdragon Ride platform. CARIAD's cooperation with Qualcomm Technologies is an important step to strengthen its competitiveness in the field of high-performance semiconductors. The idea behind this move is that software and hardware must be perfectly matched to achieve optimal performance and efficiency of central computing systems in the long term, which is particularly important for complex functions such as high-level autonomous driving.
