The era of the life and life of Peter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/1530–1569) was characterized by a distinct clash of cultures. He witnessed the Wars of Religion, the brutal rule of the Duke of Alba as ruler of the Netherlands, and the apparent influence of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where he was born nor when he was born. However, although early academic research emphasized the vernacular character of his paintings and flat works, modern research has paid more attention to its humanistic content.

Bruegel started out as a printmaker for publisher Hieronymus Cock, where he created a number of printmaking series that were distributed throughout Europe. The works depict evil and virtue, as well as joyful peasant festivals and sweeping panoramic views of the landscape. After that, he increasingly turned to painting, serving the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. Instead of idealizing reality, he bravely confronted the problems of his time, showed the horrors of religious wars, and took a critical stance on the ecclesiastical system. To this end, Bruegel developed his own pictorial language of dissent, adding subconscious statements to harmless everyday scenes so as not to repercuse them.

The book is based on a previous monograph published by Tassen in xxl folio, in which TASCHEN gives a comprehensive overview of the painter's entire work in the form of photographs. The book contains remarkable details and reproductions that show Bruegel's legendary world with unprecedented clarity. To celebrate Tassen's 40th anniversary, the book showcases all 40 paintings, accompanied by amplified details and easy-to-understand immersive text.
