Johannes Vermeer, creator of the oil paint life
Although he has only 35 works, it has sparked a New York Times bestseller; a film starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Fiss; record numbers of visitors to art institutions from Amsterdam to Washington, D.C.; and thousands of people flock to the Māori quest in The Hague to see the mysterious and fascinating Girl with The Pearl Earrings, known as the "Dutch Mona Lisa." However, Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was barely famous during his lifetime beyond the patrons of his hometown of Delft and a small circle. After his death, his name was largely forgotten except for a handful of Dutch art collectors and dealers. Outside the Netherlands, his work has even been mistaken for the work of other artists. It wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that Vermeer attracted the attention of the international art world, which suddenly saw his narrative details, meticulous texture details and majestic planes of light, discovered a genius, and never looked back. This 40th Anniversary Edition presents a complete catalogue of Vermeer's works, presenting the calm and striking scenes cherished by galleries in Europe and the United States in a monograph with a high reproduction quality. Clear details and articles tracing Vermeer's career illustrate his extraordinary abilities, where he not only bears witness to the trends and embellishments of the Dutch Golden Age, but also encapsulates the entire story in a brief gesture, expression or look.
