In 214 BC, Qin Shi Huang unified Lingnan and established the three counties of Guilin, Xiang County, and Nanhai, of which Nanhai County was ruled in today's Guangzhou, known as "Panyu" in ancient times. After more than 400 years of operation in the Qin and Han Empires, the Lingnan region has accepted the influence of the Central Plains and other cultures on the basis of the local native culture and formed its own regional characteristics.
