Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S game console sold more than the Xbox 360 over the same period

IT Home April 23 news, according to onMSFT reported that in the 17 months of the market, Xbox Series X|S sales compared to the Xbox 360 (also the same 17-month period) nearly 4.5 million units. VGChartz has released a March sales report and a comparison of sales of the two consoles.

The report notes that both the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 were released in November, so the initial holiday season releases of the two systems are a fair comparison. As of March 2022, 13.87 million Microsoft Xbox Series X|S consoles have been sold. It currently leads the Xbox 360 by 4.49 million units, a gap that has widened by nearly 500,000 units (480485 units) since last month.

By comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 9.38 million units after 17 months on the market. The Xbox 360 didn't reach the 10 million unit sales mark until the 19th month, and the Xbox 360 took 26 months to reach the current sales of the Xbox Series X|S.

Why is this important? While 360's successor, Xbox One, is now seen as a blunder by Microsoft thanks to its less-than-brilliant presentation and messaging as an "anti-gamer," the Xbox 360 was an important success for Microsoft, attracting a large number of players and eventually selling more than 85 million units.

Of course, one has to take into account the fact that the home console market is much larger today than it was in 2005, but the Xbox Series X|S is still on sale and its life cycle is just beginning.
