"The pursuit of truth is a constant topic of painting. In an era full of reverie and color experience, I can only grasp the feeling of "reality" from the state of the person I see. ”

Artist's own account

How to draw well is a difficult task. The word "good" contains the judgments of the self and others at different stages, at different levels, and from different angles.

"Good" here is an adjective, and the opposite is poor, bad, and relativistic. "Good" is also a vague and general evaluation word. Once you have to dig deeper, what is the best way to ask? It becomes very troublesome, like discussing what is "beautiful", and becomes a university question. As far as painting is concerned, the word "good" for drawing a good picture contains a standard that can be understood. Especially when you are in China, the academic environment, the major is oil painting, and the preference is the realistic category in figurative painting... When the situation becomes concrete and realistic, the degree of "good" will gradually become a bit different.

He Hongzhou, professor of Art Push | Guomei: The pursuit of truth is an eternal topic of painting

He Hongzhou created the scene

We often quote past paintings that have become classics to students as "benchmarks" in teaching. The masterpieces of the development process of art history have become the goals that can be pursued in this bit by bit of identification, whether they can be done for the time being, but in this criss-crossing comparison, the standard of "good" slowly generates a thick bottom line that cannot be elaborated in words, but can be perceived. This bottom line, constructed by the accumulation of tradition, the development of painting, and the accumulation of sensory experience, is not only constructing the students' cognition, but also constructing our own judgments.

I praise the observation of wisdom that can be integrated into the hand, but I am not a sosophistician, who has every reason to believe in the existence of artistic personality and the value it embodies in artistic creativity, and also deeply appreciates the inextricable relationship between the epochality, nationality and painting. When the pattern of the diversified era provides room for the growth of art development, and we still have to face the picture, painting "good" is not only an attitude, but also a desire related to the cultivation of life.

"Departure"

550x270cm, 2009 He Hongzhou, Huang Faxiang

"Departure" (cooperation) is He Hongzhou's first large-scale historical painting, which is repeatedly polished in conception, artistic restoration of historical scenes, full play of the expression of oil painting language, especially the appropriate integration of personal experience and national memory, giving "Departure" a distinct new period imprint and characteristics. In 2009, "Departure" was collected in the permanent collection of the National Art Museum of China.

"Lin Fengmian on the Way to the West", 200x200cm, 2014

"Lin Fengmian on the Way to the West" shows the scene when Lin Fengmian and other teachers and students of the Hangzhou National Art College moved west due to the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and arrived at the Yuanling Tomb in Xiangxi. He Hongzhou juxtaposes the national art teachers in dress with the local ethnic minorities who help transport luggage, intending to express the transition of a generation of scholars and artists such as Lin Fengmian from the ivory tower to the folk and the crucible of the times.

The Long March of the Literary Army, 225x270cm, 2017

"The Long March of the Wen Army" also abandons the monumental viewpoint and strips away more symbolic meaning, and adopts a more difficult and more realistic approach, reconstructing and reproducing the specific scene of "where to go" between President Zhu Kezhen and Su Buqing, Wang Ganchang, Fei Gong, Shu Xingbei, Hu Gangfu and a group of gentlemen on the way to the west of Zhejiang University, and the painting depicts a feat and a miracle in the history of science education with a strong sense of scene.

Landscape on the Bridge, 235x195cm, 2014

In 2014, he was the only gold medalist in the "12th National Art Exhibition Oil Painting Exhibition"

Based on this, in 2014, He Hongzhou created "Scenery on the Bridge", which showed the European study abroad career of Lin Fengmian, Wu Dayu and Lin Wenzheng in the form of portraits. The reason why the title of the painting is called "Landscape on the Bridge", the most important meaning is about the bridge. Paris was the center of the world art collection at that time, and the act of studying in Paris itself had the meaning of a bridge between China and the West, and the bridge, as a means of externalizing the artist's mind, was both related to reality and connected to history.

"Manjiang Red" 270cm×530.5cm, 2016

He Hongzhou, Huang Faxiang, Yin Hua

For the shaping of Yue Fei's image in "Manjiang Hong", He Hongzhou has undergone a process of repeated thinking and revision. When he approached Yue Fei in the historical records infinitely and found that there was a huge contrast between him and the existing artistic image, He Hongzhou's driving power was that he not only recognized and recognized Yue Fei in the vast historical materials, but also took into account that "everyone has a Yue Fei in their hearts", and finally successfully created the image of a national hero who was "loyal to the country and fierce in his ambition" with a strong atmosphere, the composition of the open movement and the tragic power.

"Time Frontrunner"

He Hongzhou often teased himself, "Except for painting people, other than painting." This theme continues from his graduation in 1988 to this day. In such a seemingly narrow field, He Hongzhou has persisted for 30 years, but he has his own ambitions, his paintings have plots, and he never stops at realistic narratives, but more on this subject to express his understanding of the language of oil painting and his views on the daily life of contemporary people.

He Hongzhou seems to be very casual in framing, the painting style is realistic and natural, presenting an unadorned reality, but when you taste it carefully, you can feel his ingenuity and see the depth in the ease. The oil painting "Fancy Years" shows a pair of ethnic minority dressed girls, the composition is not large, the portrayal is meticulous and exquisite, the position of the characters is orderly, taking care of each other, and blending into one. The background is very simple, and the girls hold an umbrella in their hands, suggesting the environment in which they are located, and also giving the audience a lot of room for imagination.

Confused (Aphasia) 190x150cm, 2006

In 2004, Mr. Xu Jiang, president of the China Academy of Fine Arts, wrote a prologue to the exhibition of Hongzhou, Yin Xiong and Cui Xiaodong in Hong Kong: "They insisted on using some traditional skills as a place to settle down, as a way to express their worries about the passable traditions that are passing away, and to narrate the nostalgia of urban people in a classical complex." They have finally become the 'aphasiars' of this era of 'chorus'." It means that the three of them have different contexts from the mainstream painting of the time, and "Confusion" has been renamed "The Aphasia" at that time. Since then, He Hongzhou has been diligently sneaking on the artistic path of realistic painting as always, and his silence is as silent as gold.
