Practicing corporate citizenship and social responsibility, OPPO promotes sustainable development with science and technology

April 22, 2022, Shenzhen – Every year, Earth Day is Celebrated on April 22, and the festival was originally established to call on more people to pay attention to the world's environmental protection. While providing a better and smarter life for global users, OPPO also actively assumes the responsibility of global corporate citizenship, and practices sustainable development actions for a long time, from its own green operation and green product design to the public's green action advocacy, and constantly promotes the realization of the green earth vision.

Reduce plastic pollution and practice the concept of green products

Plastic pollution is a key issue for environmental protection today, with about 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flowing into the oceans each year, according to UN Environment[1]. Plastics that have not been properly recycled are polluting the soil and oceans, and broken microplastic particles are also being ingested into the body, posing health risks.

In the selection of product packaging materials, OPPO adheres to the "3R+1D" international green packaging design principles, and the use of product packaging materials adheres to the reduction, recyclability, recyclability and degradability. Starting from the European market, the plastic content of OPPO mobile phone products color box packaging has been reduced by 95% in three years, and biodegradable polylactic acid materials are also used for plastic packaging materials that are temporarily irreplaceable.

The OPPO 5G CPE T2 parts, launched this year, also enable plastic recycling, using plastic from discarded consumer products (PCR) to minimize dependence on virgin plastics.

Reduce wood consumption and promote the recycling of waste resources

Forests are a resource for human survival and are home to more than three-quarters of the world's terrestrial life. But the Amazon has lost at least 17% of its forest cover over the past half century due to global tree deforestation,[2] and the loss of forest area will threaten global biodiversity and accelerate global warming.

In the choice of packaging materials, OPPO reduces the consumption of wood through the reuse of resources. Starting from the European market, OPPO uses about 45% recycled fibers in the packaging materials of its mobile phone products, which come from recycled waste paper or plant residues (such as sugarcane and bamboo residues).

E-waste recycling is reinvented, making every mobile phone product more durable

Global e-waste has grown by 21% in the past 5 years, making it the fastest growing household waste in the world. However, only 17.4% of global e-waste is recycled[3]. OPPO pays attention to the long-term threat to the ecological environment caused by e-waste pollution, and is committed to improving the durability of products to make each product stay with you longer, and establishing a recycling system for waste electronic products to reduce the environmental damage caused by improper disposal of waste electronic products.

OPPO Find X5 series is equipped with a self-developed battery health engine, so that the 80W super flash charge still maintains more than 80% battery health after 1600 charge and discharge cycles, twice the industry standard, so that a battery can accompany you longer.

At present, OPPO has established a product recycling system around the world, carried out old-for-new activities, and widely promoted the recycling and reuse of waste products. Taking the Chinese market as an example, OPPO mobile phones will recycle 1.2 million units in 2021, with a total recycled product weight of 216 tons.

OPPO also deals with e-waste in partnership with industry partners and non-profit organizations. In the European Union, OPPO provides funds to support the operation of the local recycling system and cooperates with professional third-party recycling companies to recycle waste electronic products. In Australia, OPPO and the Taronga Conservation Society have launched a waste electronics recycling campaign to properly recycle e-waste and reduce e-waste to landfill.

In addition, OPPO, as the first batch of manufacturers, joined the Eco Rating program co-founded by a number of leading European operators to participate in the ecological rating of smartphone products to promote the green transformation of the mobile industry.

Participate in environmental protection actions with more people

Not only through scientific and technological means to actively provide solutions to environmental problems, OPPO actively cooperates with public welfare organizations to call on more people to become a part of solving environmental protection problems with different forms of public welfare activities and artistic actions.

In Italy, OPPO partnered with the Plastic Free Odv Onlus Association to organize a plastic collection event to effectively recycle 10 tons of plastic waste with the help of 1,000 volunteers.

At the same time in Australia, OPPO has partnered with the Coral Reef Restoration Foundation to popularize the great barrier reef coral survival crisis through AR technology and call on the public to participate in the protection of the great barrier reef. In 2021, OPPO donated $52,000 to support its goal of nurturing one million new corals by 2026.

Looking at the world, the protection of the natural environment and species diversity cannot be ignored. With 1 million species threatened with extinction[4], OPPO also wants to contribute to the preservation of their unique colors and appearances. For two years, OPPO has partnered with National Geographic and National Geographic photographers to capture more endangered animals with the Find X series of mobile imaging capabilities, creating opportunities for people to reconnect with nature.

It is our common responsibility to protect the earth's homeland. OPPO believes that through scientific and technological innovation and the participation of more people, it will continue to promote the progress of ecological environmental protection. On this year's Earth Day, together with OPPO, we start with individual actions to jointly safeguard the green future of the earth.
