RISC-V ported Android 12.0 to go one step further: Ali Pingtou brother for the first time to achieve AI support

Abstract: Since the successful compatibility of the Gentetsu C910 with the Android system in October last year, RISC-V and the Android ecosystem have once again made important progress. On April 20, Beijing time, at the spring meeting of the Global Chips Alliance, Ali Pingtou Brother announced the new progress of RISC-V compatibility with Android 12.0: TensorFlow Lite was successfully run on The Gentetsu C910, which for the first time realized RISC-V AI support on the new Android system; at the same time, Pingtou Brother integrated a number of third-party key components to successfully sample the majority of RISC-V integrators and developers.

RISC-V is an emerging CPU instruction set architecture, Android (Android) is one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, the deep integration of the two is placed high hopes by the industry, is a very forward-looking research direction, the technical challenge is very large. Previously, through more than 100,000 lines of code modifications, Pingtou Brother took the lead in implementing the porting of key components of Android 10.0 on RISC-V, successfully running the Chrome browser, and initially proved the high-performance potential of the RISC-V architecture. This work of the flathead brother has also been open sourced.

With the iterative update of the Android system, Android 12.0 version introduces a new bazel architecture, a new Rust language and new studio features, and its Art and Bionic modules have also achieved architectural evolution. This presents a whole new challenge for RISC-V-compatible Android systems. Based on this, PingtouGe has systematically optimized and supported Android 12.0 for RISC-V, and successfully run the Tensor Flow Lite model on the RISC-V architecture through Android Studio, opening up RISC-V support for artificial intelligence on the Android platform.

In view of the lack of support, system incompatibility and low certification level faced by the development of RISC-V third-party components, PingtouGe integrated and verified the key functions of audio playback, video playback, WiFi and camera of the RISC-V architecture for the first time on the Android 12.0 version: this proves the feasibility of RISC-V compatible with the latest version of Android 12.0, and will also greatly reduce the threshold for RISC-V manufacturers to develop and integrate related components.

"This time, we have extended RISC-V support for Android to the core toolset, third-party libraries and SoC board support packages (BSPs), integrating them into the system for the first time, and taking the integration of RISC-V and Android a step further." These architecture supports will be the next milestone if they are accepted as android's official ABI interface. Flathead brother technical expert Mao Han introduced.

It is understood that Mao Han is the chairman of the Android Technology Working Group (Android SIG) of the RISC-V International Foundation. RisC-V International Foundation is committed to promoting the development and maturity of technology, standards and ecology, with 9 committees and more than 60 technical working groups, of which a total of 8 technical leadership positions come from Ali Pingtou, the largest number of Chinese enterprises.

Li Chunqiang, a senior technical expert at Pingtou Brother, told reporters: "We will also continue to open source the new progress of RISC-V on the Android system, hoping that this move will attract more ecological partners to add new architectures." RISC-V is a future-oriented architecture, and Pingtou Brother will continue to promote the construction of an open and inclusive RISC-V ecosystem, so that more developers and manufacturers can share the technical dividends of RISC-V. “
